Yes, let's drop all of the interesting civilizations in under-represented areas of the Earth! Replace them all with even more European civs! I'd much rather have two Polish cities in Eastern Europe than an Iroquois empire in North America...

Civ votes Increase the size of your Attachments

Here are my votes guys and gals.

BTW...I agree with a lot of comments regarding civs that need to be in, but a couple of things to keep in mind:

1) if we looked at all "valid" civ (i.e. ones that made significant contributions to society) we'd have 200+ (yes, including Hebrew)

2) many civs were extensions or contractions or others, so many (i.e. Turks/Byzantines/Ottomans) will overlap

Here are my votes, in no order (with short justification):

1-Spain (leader in exploration, first country to champion nationhoon, IMHO) - 20 pts.

2-Mongols (controlled more area than any empire ever) - 20 pts.

3-Arabs (can't overlook such a broad and long-standing influence in worl affairs) - 15 pts.

4-Canada (I'm Canadian, so....) - 20 pts.

5-Turks (another empire that controlled a portion of both Asia and Europe) - 15 pts.

6-Inca (the only large empire native to South America, and a good natural adversary for Aztecs) - 15 pts.

7-Bantu (very large African empire from which much of it continues draws its current languages) - 20 pts.

8-Austronesian (anthropologically speaking, this includes descendents from Vietnam and Papua-New Guinea, plus Pacific Islanders, Maori and Australian aborigines - yes, it's a diverse group, but they are connected and they are small individual groups) - 15 pts.

9-Vikings (encompasses much of Scandanavia, led exploration in northern hemisphere) - 20 pts.

NOTE ON BABYLONIANS: This is a collective term more than a specific one, and includes Summerians, Pheonicians and Akkadians. I think it's pretty inclusive.

That's incorrect, actually - the Chimu empire was a predecessor empire until the Incas wiped it out. Unfortunately few people know about the Chimu - the Incas are generally remembered more because they got wiped out by the Spanish.

All,
I updated the ranking again (up to Jkondrac). 235 votes, 35807 points (95.2%).

GP,
I think it would be in my own best interest if I would ignore your posts in this thread from now on

LOL@Stefu. What is it with you and Polynesians? Whatever it is, I don't think you should overestimate the power of GGS. I was the first person to vote for the Polynesians and I never knew of any Polynesia chapter in GGS (in fact, I still don't). I think the same goes for many people here: we just wanna see some Oceanian civ in the the Polynesians are one of the few 'civs' from that area (the only other well-known examples being the Australians, the Indonesians and the Aborigines). As far as starting position goes, presuming Firaxis will make it possible in a patch (they'd better!), you could easily make them start at New Guinea, that's where they originally came from (or that region anyway). Since New Guinea is considerably larger than Great Britain, I think that would work out fine (well, IRL anyway, not sure about Civ maps).

Furtigan,
I gave your vote for the Mon Khmer to the Khmer, as the Mon and the Khmer have so far been seen as seperate civilizations (which strictly speaking they were, although I can see why you merged them). If you want to change this, let me know.

Corvi #6,
FYI, you have 30 points left. BTW, I never even heard of the Tocharians, care to enlighten me?

genghisvick,
FYI, you have 40 points left.

remconius,
FYI, you have 55 points left.

Mr. Rogers,
FYI, you have 20 points left.

WhittyMike,
As LoD pointed out, I think you misunderstood the rules (at most 20 points, not at least). Since I think your vote would look considerably different if you had understood the rules correctly, I won't count your vote until you had a chance to change it (at least fix the Celts & Vikings and perhaps give some of those civs 1 points and whatever else you might want to change). BTW, no need to list all the civs, that's in fact just more work for me. I can't copy it straight into the spreadsheet anyway, for one thing because, everytime I add a vote, the order of the civs could change (and new civs could be added).

Jay Bee,
Well, everytime I think the voting slows down and it's about time to close things up a new surge of voters comes in I will keep the poll open at least until the decisions for the Apolyton ExtraCivs Pack have been made. After that, I might still keep it open because the extra votes might still be interesting for Firaxis in case they want to release an official expansion pack with new civs (one Firaxian - Jeff IIRC - admitted in a chat that he was keeping an eye on this poll, so who knows?). But I'm not sure about that yet though, we'll see...

Dragonlord,
Martinus is correct, you can only give 20 points per civ and you must vote for at least 6 civs. I can't count your vote like that.

All,
I made some changes to my own vote as well. For the record, here they are:
Spanish -11
Phoenicians -11
Olmec -9
Harrapans -5
Polynesians +12
Mali +12
Khmer +12
(this was obvioulsy done to give the civs that I like and that are close to the top 15 but not quite in an extra push)

Joe R. Golowka,
You gave 161 points. In order to make your vote count anyway, I gave the Spanish 1 point less (17 instead of 18). If you wish to change anything, let me know.

deathstick,
FYI, you have 40 points left.

Remy,
FYI, you have 80 points left.

ericovan,
FYI, you have 40 points left.

True, but I don't think that's inconsistent with what I said. The Chinchorro can be included as a technologically significant society, or the Moche , but neither had the impact of the Inca.

The decline of the Moche and fall of the Sican state gave rise to the Chimu, so where do you draw the line?

Plus the Chimu empire was asborbed *wholly* by the Inca, which is why the Inca is the better choice.

1. They never amounted to anything, 2. They were disunited (making a single 'Polynesian' civ would be kinda like making a single 'African' or 'Latin American' civ) and 3. It would suck to play them in the World Map.

And now you go to vote Polynesians! REMOVE THAT VOTE THERE THIS INSTANT!

'CSA' stood for 'civ-specific ability', not 'Confederate States of America'. And although I´m slightly familiar with the history of the Civil War (McPherson´s 'Battle Cry Of Freedom' is one of my favourite history books), I didn´t vote for the Confederates.

Yes, the coracle .. I suggested it as a special unit for 'maritime' civs (a possible additional CSA). Sort of a fast galley with no attack value, available right from the start, suited to settle archipelago parts of a map. (BTW, Stefu, so much about 'it would suck to play the Polynesians in the World map'. )
