He, he, I like to call it The Day of the Hispanic Race better Today is not a holiday in the States. I always found that a bit weird.

As a matter of a fact, we call it "Día de la Hispanidad", which is like saying "Hispanic Holiday", I guess. We conmemorate the day Christopher Columbus discovered América, and it's also the Virgen del Pilar holiday.

BTW, Jesús, isn't Columbus Day a holiday in the States then?

I dislike nationalism, but look at France... She is more centralized; there are much more patriotism that in our country, but there are nationalism, too. The man-of-the-street (I guess that this isn't the correct way to say that in English) have less patriotism that other countries...

On the other hand, the Spaniards many times feel that they are 'special' or 'diferent'....

Yes, we Spaniards even think that are special among other Spanish people, don't we?

Jokes apart, my stance about this is that too patriotism is possibly a bad thing, but the lack of patriotism that many people here have is also a strange thing, and one that makes me wonder.

Would some people rather be French, Italian or English than Spanish? I wouldn't.

I subscribe your last post, but, in the same way that I believe that is not better to be English that Spanish, I also believe that is not better to be Spanish that Engislh.

But, don't missunderstand me, I love Spain and his culture... And I love many other cultures, too

Well, I am not Spanish. I'm Argentine. And damn proud.

Weird thing is, we don't consider us tied to Spain, not much more than the Pakistanis or Maoris feel their ties with Britain. At least, that's what I see.

The problem is talking about "better" and "worse". If you say you're better than the others, that's just plain racism in the end.

However, I don't see the problem in saying that you like to be Spanish, and that you think you'd like better being Spanish than being Dutch. That's my case.

Yes, I know Argentinians, Chileans, Mexicans, Colombians and even Bolivians are prouser of his country than us Spanish people. Isn't it strange? Perhaps it has to do with the fact of being relatively new countries.

Without offense to anybody, hasn't Spain acomplished much more than Uruguay or Venezuela?

I really don't care much about this, as I am not an ultra-pan-hispanist, but that's not what I have read in Argentine newspapers or perceived from the very numerous Argentinians have met and became friend of in San Diego

All those comparisons are unfair. there is no way to tell this. Whom you're going to ask? BTW, Uruguay is two times World Soccer Champion and Venezuela has won many Miss Universe titles. Ain't those huge accomplishments for you? They qualify as such in my book

I find this an interesting discussion.
I have found patriotism/nationalism to be the cheapest way of making people believe they are better than others. Dunno what other people may think of that.
