To me this is disastrous. It means if you have a lot of stacked individual units in the endgame (as opposed to armies), you're going to have to move them overland ONE BY ONE in the same old tedious way as Civ2!!

This is the one thing I had simply taken for granted was going to be put right in Civ3.

Anyone else feel, like me, that this must be put right in the very first patch?!

Got spare money?

At first look, I agree.

But Civ-3 is different in the sense that its not going to be so inflationary easy to build buckloads of ICS-cities and IUS-units in Civ-3, as it often was in Civ-2. (IUS = Infinite Unit Sprawl).

I dont know - but perhaps we should wait until we have played the game first before we judge this too hard.

No, I don't agree. At this point, all our anticipations of how things will be are pure conjecture. We have recently found how some info we have been exposed to has been old, misleading, or just plain wrong! Also, we keep basing all our opinions on our experiences with Civ2, and Civ3 has enough fundamental (though not funamentalist ) differences that the way we play it may be different.

As long as it will be before we get the game, we can withhold judgement until we've played it for a month or so. Then start persuading Infogrames/Firaxis as to how much better it could be with a patch here or there (and MP for those who can't live without it).

I guess we'll all see in two weeks.

But yah i know what you mean. That gets really annoying to move all those units.

Doesn't matter much to me since I'm usually not a militarist. Stacks would be very nice though. Though in the endgame, you should be mainly using armies, right?

... OTH, I would hope that after you have told a unit you are done moving it, you would have the option to continue moving it if had any movement points remaining (ala CtP).

Yah, i know what you mean. it was annoying when you pressed space bar and then you realized that you still wanted to move the unit, you couldn't. I hope they have the same thing as CTP in civ 3 with regards to this

Well, this is no loss to me- I never wanted a group movement feature, and I always (about 99% of the time) move units manually with the number pad. I am a control freak, and I always want to know what I am moving; where; and why. Doing this by hand helps me to keep track of my units.

But I do agree that it can become a micro-management hassle.

I concur, that was one of good features in CTP - the ability to stack up to 12 units and move them as one force...but hey, that's what the CIV3 "Army" function is for.

Suffering from ads?

i think it could turn out worse than the lack of mp

seriously though, a lot will depend on how good the go-to routines are and whether or not there will be keyboard shortcuts(go to city X, etc)

and talking MP. it would sure speed up the game if moving stacks of units were allowed... especially in Diplo games where large armies can be had and need to be moved long distances

And still only 3 or 4 units per army? This is going to be a nightmare.

Lets hope the path finding is as perfect as Firaxis claims.

Although the 'goto' command is a nifty feature, the reason why I prefer moving stacks is for defensive purposes. Even if a group of units won't fight/defend/die as a group, the ability to move stacks would allow me to have a high-defense unit escort a low-defense unit, or a 0-defense worker or settler (or GL.) Now we'll have to micromanage movement to make certain that worker has a defensive unit guarding its hinder.

Might there, perhaps, be an escort command?

Most of the time when offensive units are built in cities I want them on the front line ASAP, so stacking and movement wont be very useful to me in that respect.

However for the use that ajbera described, I'd find that useful.

Something really useful would be a "redirect" command, like was done in MOO and MOO2 - when units are built they are automatically sent to a specific point on the map ie an automatic goto.
