When you use a Great Leader to build an army it is like loading units onto a transport. Once on they cannot be removed or replaced. Some say you can only use landbased units, and no body knows whether workers or bombard units can be put together this way and keep their special capacities.
Armies allow the pooling of hitpoints, and they make good offensive forces when attacking well defended cities.
Great Leaders are rarer than unicorns.

Oh. I forgot. Great Leaders have NO defence points. So get that sucker back to a base ASAP or it might get captured and used against you.
