It wasn't clearly decided what type of map we're going to use, and it would probably be a waste to do any major designing until we choose one. I suggest we all vote for what we think is the best option.
This poll times out in ten days.

As much as I would like a settlement in this issue I do not think that we can vote for anything before we have had a clear discussion with all pros and cons presented in an orderly manner. So I hope that Vet or Amjayee or Chris will come over here and tell us something; otherwise I have no choise but to agree with Leland (since he is the only one who knows what he is talking about - I do not) and support an old fashioned tile based map. Something I do not want to.

hi all. I have been managing administrative things about the university... boy I had some long lines to wait in! anyway I was eqausted to post anything smart though I was browsing the boards, mostly about civ3 and even off-topic, heh
I mean, civ3 will not have multiplayer, an lots of other stuff. The more it is close to come, the more I am sure it will be civ2 with better graphics. Man I was really looking forward to playing some elegant MP with you folks.
Anyway, at one point I was wondering, since most of features we want to have are covered in the List, and firaxis has the list, what will we have to do?
well, it seems that civ3 will not be the final evolution of the civ genre.
we have work to do people!
I ll read what Leland wrote and I ll vote then. But I think this poll is ok for people who only browse our forum, so we can know what they want. Thanks for being active Nath!
I switched to different forum layout, and now I can see numer of views on thread together with number of replies. Well, judging from that, there is a certain bunch of civ fanatics and fans who regulary drop in to check us out.

Maybe I've just been gone a little too long, but what exactly do each of these options mean and how will any of them affect the game?

See the 3d & Spherical maps discussion thread for clarification of the terms in question. However, I have to admit that even though I am the one who came up with this distinction, recent discussion has made me change my mind. The tradeoffs that need to be done with the map design are not as simple as just discreet/continuous. There are several (almost) orthogonal choices to be made:
Tiles vs. No tiles
Areas vs. No areas (areas meaning that some information is stored in freely shaped polygons on the map)
Point-based movement vs. Tile-based movement
3d vs. 2d
Cartesian vs. Polar coordinates (latter allows spherical map with non-tiled 2d map)
I can imagine eight or nine sensible combinations of the above...
