I think this whole thread shows the problem with UU's. Many of the UU's became part of that Civ IRL because of terrain, resources, or both. For example, the english unit is the man 'o war, but the english only had a strong navy because they are an island race. The russians have cossacks because they had a plentiful supply of horses.

I think what i'm saying is, the UU's would have been better allocated once the world has been built, according to what terrain or resources were around, rather than just which civ you pick at the start. It's going to be very annoying if you pick the romans and cant get iron without selling your soul to the only other civ who has it

Increase the size of your Attachments

Good point. But then the other civs are more than likely going to need whatever resources you have as well. It can work both ways, and so trade becomes all that more desirable.

Sometimes CIV was 'luck of the draw', depending on your terrain and continent size you started on. The resources can add to this, but they are not 100% out of your control because of trade, and colonies.

Now that I think about it, this actually encourages exploration as well.

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

I agree there will be ways round it, and if you're the Civ holding back he required resource, it will make for a very fun game

I just think that in most cases, the Civ's UU only happened IRL because the resource was readily available.

I like the idea of fixed recources in the World map. But I do think you should have the option to make it random

Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

The one thing we can count on seeing within weeks of Civ 3 's release is a proliferation of alternative world maps (and probably alternative UU's for the Native Americans where necessary). The problem with countries like England and Japan is that they just don't work on a world-map scale Civ game. We need regional maps to make them practical to play. Even then, England would be whupped by France, Spain, Germany etc unless they have solved the bigger is better problem.
