Windows XP Got spare money?

I'm considering upgrading to Windows XP (see thread in OTF) - does anyone know if Civ3 won't run under XP?

He's right - it's almost certain to work. The only situation where it might not work is if one of the drivers (most notably the display driver) is not up to scratch.

For example, I'm running XP Home edition (dual-booting with W2K to be on the safe side). I've got a Radeon, and the ATI drivers for XP work with all the games I've tried them on... BUT the ATI drivers have a problem where they won't let my monitor run at more than 60Hz. Grrr.

Incidentally, the MS ATI drivers don't have this problem, but they run games at a crawl (and I mean REALLY slow). So, unplayable games, or a flickery monitor

So, your milage may vary with XP. Any driver problems are likely to be sorted out sooner rather than later though. (I hope!)

Is that a wormhole in your pocket Chowlett, or are you just happy to see me?

I have been debating about getting XP- not so much for the upgrade, but for the change. I know that one of the Firaxians did state that CivIII will work with XP

What operating system do you have now? It it's 98SE, have you given any thought to Windows2000? I like it and it is more stable than 98SE.

I've been reviewing XP on another computer of mine, it's nice - but for some reason I still keep gravitating back to my Windows2000 Professional.

I haven't really considered Win2000 ( I use Win98 SE btw) because of the general impression I get that it is more of a business O/S.

Also, I have heard of some games having issues with 2000.

Tired of ads?

I currently run Win98SE as well, but my install is flaky and needs replacing. I've heard good things about XP over all previous incarnations - and besides, I know someone who is willing to, er, give me his copy. After uninstalling first, of course .

But anyway - my question has been answered, and the rest of this discussion should go in the OTF.

...

"Borrowing" XP might be a verrryy bad idea. It supposedly keeps track of the system it was installed on and communicates that with Microsoft along with its serial number. If the computer configuration varies too much, ....

Well, I don't know if it gives you any warning or not. So get a backup of your old system first.

Hmm, something for me to hack.

Well, if I was borrowing a copy of somebody's and MS secret agents (:cough: weeners :cough showed up at my door, I would just say I found it laying by the roadside.

Shows how much you know. The serial I'm using for WinXP Pro is used on quite a lot of computers, but it works just fine. No activation. No worries. Ahh, warez.

The bounties of Corporate Edition . Apparently the thing has no copy protection checking of that type - presumably because you buy 1 CD and 500 licenses for the 500 computers in your company, and so they'll all have the same serial no., but not the same hardware.

Is that the only difference between the Pro and the Corporation? Because when I downloaded it, in the NFO file it says its the Corporate, yet when I install Windows, it says its the Pro.

XP == W2K.5

Supporting XP is a no-brainer if you're already supporting W2K. If it won't run on WXP, I'll eat my hat (or, at least, I would if I had one...)

Yeah, the only real thing your OS needs to support is DirectX, so any version of Windows with (I think) version 8 and above will be fine for Civ3

DirectX nine is out now in Beta too!

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

How does Microsoft make money off of DirectX anyway? Or for that matter Internet Explorer, MSN Messenger, Outlook Express, etc? I guess these must be the good side-effects of Microsoft being a monopoly with (last I heard) $36 billion in the bank.

They prevent the competition from making money out of such programs - and it hurts them more than it does MS...
