I wonder, would Satellite weapons have a bombardment number or a regular attack number?

Yes, Exo-skeletons maybe combined with robotics allow for mech type units.

BTW, (excuse my ignorance but) what does FTL stand for?

Culture changes with communication, primarily. What effect would the impacts of optical transmissions, combined with total immersion virtual reality, have on human society?

Culture's tricky... nobody sees it coming, and you can't very well research it. Look for current trends and past cycles.

all those gravity-techs coud be put in Artificial Gravity, and can have lots of application, military and industrial.
Military :
faster units.
units that don't require oil, but maybe some new resource needed to manipulate gravity.

industrial :
faster building, don't have to use slow cranes to build, maybe reduced shield cost for buildings.

yeah...right, and maybe they can throw in a cure for common cold also

Satellites could be like bombers but with an increased range and cost.

Some sort of advanced scanners to increase line of sight, if that is possible in civ3.

Sorry, I had a headache that wouldn't quit.

Cure for the common cold.

Cure for ignorance, incompetence, and just plain stupidity…yeah dealing with a lot of that at work.

What about deep sea things? Along the lines of the under water cities? I said that already didn't I? Well, it's late, and maybe I shouldn't have brought this thread back to life? Oh well?

Anyone got anything else?

Don't go for nanotech. It's never going to happen. People will look back on us and laugh, like we laugh at robot butlers.

Some suggestions:

3D Urban Planning:City design on three dimensions not two. Gives the arcology city improvement.

Integrated transport: Fully integrated, computer controlled transport systems.

Artificial body parts: Faster organic unit repair.

Synthetic food: Allows production to be converted to food.

Intelligent Buildings: Allows an electronic city goveror to be created, which increases the productivity of all builings by a small amount, reduces pollution, reduces upkeep costs but increases unhappiness. Also automatically assigns jobs to surplus citizens based on the tax, luxury and science slide bars.

Intelligent machines: All non-organic units repair faster.
Cryogenics: Cities with a cryogenics facility never starve, as
surplus citizens are automatically frozen if food runs low. If it is destroyed as a result of warfare, then all the frozen citizens die.

Electronic warfare: Lets you spread havoc over the Internet.

What time are you starting from? Well anyways, you should have at least the near future to begin with. You'll need to have different ages, as that is an important thing in Civ3.

-Genetic Age (2020 - 2300)
-Nanotech Age (2300-2700)
-Diamond/Intersteller Age (2700+)

Government Ideas:

New Governments:

-E-Democracy - Near-future Genetic Aged more democratic republic, with the people having more say over the internet.

-Virtual Democracy - A true democracy connected through an advanced 'net and neural interfaces. Either a Nanotech or Intersteller Aged government. Worst war restrictions, but good science, trade, etc.

-Technocracy - Late-Genetic Aged government with scientists ruling the government. Exellent science, ok military, but bad happiness, and horrible culture (Much higher culture buildings cost)

-Corperate Republic - Near-future Genetic Aged government where a country is fully controlled by a company. Stockholders have a say in electing the CEO. Exellect economy, but cultural buildings cost more.

-Ecotopia/Enviromentalism - Basically fundamentalism with ecology instead of theocracy. Nanotech Aged government.

As a town planner who also has to deal with transport, I´d rather believe in nanotech then in arcologies or integrated transport.

Just plain weird Enter the AD-FREE zone

In this month's Scientific American, I read about a theory dealing
with the properties of light as seen from great distances.

Evidently, the properties of electrons, and by extention, all
matter were different in the past.

If true, it could deal a staggering blow to uniformitarianism, the
law that states that all observable phenomena in the universe
have been the same since the its beginning and that what holds
true for one part of the universe, holds true for all parts. This,
along with rationalism, is one of the core principles of scientific
enquiry

By the way, did you want "realistic" techs, or any sort of sci-fi
techs we can think of?

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I think a combination of realistic and sci-fi. I mean how realistic is Nano-Tech in todays world? In a few hundred years, though, it very well may be feasible. So I guess what I am saying is anything that seems viable. If it holds water than it should work. (Now don't take that literal, you guys. )

Give us your ideas. Even if you think they are a little far fetched, it couldn't hurt.

As far as nanotechnology goes, we're closer than you think. We actually have some - we can make gears and motors already on an unbelievebly small scale using technologies similar to what we use to make microchips with. You may see medical applications within your lifetime!

Should Microsoft be a prequisite for Corporate Republic?

I find it hard to come up with ideas, they're already taken.

What about large-scale antimatter production? That would be a gigantic leap in power production, and allow more exotic technologies.

Of course, magnetic confinement would have to be discovered first.

I didn't think about it til now but satellites could be amazingly easy to immplement. Before a satellite would have to be an actual unit, and i mean how dumb is it to have a satellite unit floating around the map. But now with the operational range you can just make it the whole world. Then give it a low chance to be intercepted and you're done. Now what would be cool is a satellite weapon nuke. You could make it just like the ICBM except that its pic is a beam of light coming from the sky. gotta be good at graphics though

Umm, then it would be a laser, not a nuke!

quote:

Nuclear power -> Fusion Power -> Antimatter -> Controlled singularity

nuclear power+magnetic confinement->Fusion power->Antimatter->spacetime manipulation->Controlled singularity

perhaps?
The question is: How detailed do we want the tech tree to be? I can throw in at least a dozen more items. Also, what kind of units and abilities would these technologies unlock?

Antimatter power plant
antimatter missle (and you thought nukes were bad )

spacetime manipulation could unlock stuff that could defend against antimatter stuff, since you could manipulate spacetime to channel the energy.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Hello people!

What about

Eudaimonia - a perfect society if you love happy citizens, low pollution, maybe research and culture, extremely crappy at war and low production.

Biorobotics - basic robots that are part-organic
(leads to...)
Biomechanics - more advanced bio-robots that can do complex tasks and bio-robotic units are cheaper to build (with a proper facility - Bionetic Enhancement?) and may repair themselves faster
(leads to...)
Biomachines and Homo Superior (which would also require some form of medical Nanotech). Biomachinery would be extremely complex machines (imagine literally "growing" spaceships and units ) and Homo Superior... I think you know what I mean

I also think the field of Quantum Mechanics and possibly Quantum Computers is unsued in civ and smac games.

The Collective - a society where every consciousness is mentally linked - bit like the borg

Space Habitation - allows you to build permanent space colonies (would probably require Nanoreplication or something )

Wouldn't it be cool that you build a wonder where you travel back in time to the global Ancient age and exterminate everyone else with your own superior weapons and technology, before they got the chance to develop!

NO it would be a beam, what the heck else would you fire from a satelliate. It wouldn't be a laser since a laser is just a fine beam of light, it doesn't break at the end. This would be some sort of intense energy ) (perhaps plasma, or an upgrade of a laser) that breaks purely horizantilly; which would give two bonus effects; A) All of its energy would be spent in the horizantal spread (thereby making it more powerful, and B) it wouldn't make a huge crater which would allow you to still colonize the area (good and bad i guess)

The preq would be Beam Weapons[/plasma] and Satelliates

Some sort of supernatural beam? Ok. Kinda straying from physics, though.

I wonder how much a plasma beam would be dispersed by the atmosphere. I also wonder how exactly it would react with the ground where it hits. Probably would burn a deep hole.

I know of nothing that "breaks purely horizantilly [sic]."

Laser beams aren't neccessarily "fine." They can be made thick, and I imagine the scattering effect of the atmosphere would make a nice glow.

Maybe I'm getting too picky, though .
