1st settlement restricted by barbarians? Suffering from ads?

I posted this at the end of another topic, but I thought it was a good question (to toot my own horn):

We know that there are barbarians in the unexplored areas of the map. Does this mean our first settler will run into them if they move too far from the starting position?

I just realized I put this in the civs thread instead of general..oops

Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

you'd have to be insane to spend 40 years wandering in the wilderness while everyone is getting ready to start on the next Wonder...

I mean, it can happen, but that's just the lot of wandering nomads.

Put an end to popups!

when i was a new civ1 player me and my brother thought it was just brilliant to wander around and see all the near by area before we settled. then we got our asses kicked because other civs had like 3 cities when we had one

Inflate your Upload Space

Well, I understand that sentiment. Certainly you don't want to wander the Earth with your settler, but if you start in a desert, you should be able to move your settler out of it without being destroyed.

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

40 years?!? Do you belive yourself Moses?
Usually, if I don't find myself in a very good location, I explore a bit around. I there is a really bad location or I don't find anything good around, I just restart the game. Your first city is sooo important...
If I want some challange (without Deity AI cheating), I customise the world (Dune ) and build my first city in the first year.
