Is the Limited Edition worth buying? Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

How many of you are planning to buy the LE?

I still haven't made up my mind. On the one hand the 15 buck difference isn't that much. OTOH there isn't that much in the LE. If there had been even a half-decent strategy guide or an extra scenario I would probably have brought it.

The tech tree pullout will be useful but I feel that Firaxis is cheating us by including something that was available in the regular version earlier, only in the limited edition this time.

Does anyone know what the designer notes include? If it's interesting I might consider buying the LE.

The tin box is neat but it's worth extra money only if I really like Civ 3 and keep it as a memento and I can't know that until I buy and play the game.

Finally wouldn't it have been a great idea to release the LE. one or two weeks early? That would have been a great way of getting extra dollars from the hardcore fans. I am guessing most of us would have bought the LE by now if it had been released early.

Got spare money?

I won't pay extra for anything like that. It's fluff, and it's the kind of marketing strategy that I hate. They try to make as much money off of you as possible. That's fine and dandy, but don't leave out the stuff that you used to give us for free. That would be like McDonalds charging you extra for pickles on their cheeseburgers.

The fact that a poster tech tree is not being included in the basic package ticks me off to no end...

Yes it is annoying but it also makes the LE more valuable in comparison to the regular edition. A tech poster is worth at least 5 bucks to me.

It would be ironic though if , by pissing us off, this strategy makes less people buy the LE than otherwise.

Wittlich,
You are obviously the kind of sucker that marketing people just adore.

After thinking about it a bit, I am leaning more towards buying it for the tin box depending on how it looks. There's a pretty good chance that I will like the game after all and the box will be a cool, unique memento and pretty useful too.

Who knows; if I look after it properly and all you suckers lose yours it might be worth a fortune as an antique 50 years from now.

Suffering from ads?

Biscuit tins are incredibly useful, as both containers for food, stopping drink spills and hurling them at annoying people. OK, maybe I could do that with any biscuit tin, but its more fun if its a Civ3 biscuit tin!

(Will we get Civ3 unit biscuits too?)

I'm buying it because it is an LE as well. I've only bought one other LE, the Baldur's Gate LE, and while there was a little fluff involved, it was worth it, because I really loved the series. The tin and poster, I think are worth the $15, but it is a Civ LE .

And designer notes are usually done well by Firaxis... see Gettysburg!

Yeah I am gradually being sucked into the hype myself. Once upon a time I had this thoroughly naive notion of waiting and reading the reviews before buying the game. Now I am more likely to be camping overnight outside my software store and ready for fist-fights if there aren't enough copies.

BTW what exactly are the designer notes?

Is it worth buying for the extra's? I wouldn't.

I pre-ordered and pre-paid, get this, because I want a CIV IV.
I know they make extra bucks on it, and that's OK by me. If I did not have the money to "donate", I would not have bought the LE.

Second consideration, CIV III is a special event for me (and a lot of you), and the biscuit box will make the event more special.

OK, this is one of those times when I am worried about being so honest with you all.

It would only be worth buying if you planned to keep it un-opened and in pristine condition with the hope of selling it 20 years later on E-Bay or some equivalent for an excellent profit.

Except how many people will consider such outdated technology as compact discs as anything more than obsolete in 20 years?
Do you think a disc copy of Empire (very old game, 1978, I think, which Civ largely draws from) would be worth anything?
Also, if something's hyped up to be a collecters item, and sold to many people, then it can't be, look at Original Star Wars merchandise compared to Episode I merchandise.

However, I would like to take a gander at the designer's notes, that was the best part of the CivI manual.

Well I don't think people will buy it to play the game but as an antique item. If the game becomes a real classic you might have popular-culture museums demanding it for instance. I don't think it will be worth much in 20 years but in 50 years when most copies will be lost or damaged , a Civ 3 tin box with all the goodies in pristine condition might be worth something. It's still probably a long shot even then.

BTW could you describe the designer notes in Civ1. How is it different from the "making of Civ" material?

The word is spelt 'cool', not 'kewl', Burns. Jesus Christ, now I know how Pembleton feels about proper paragraphs. Spelling cool 'kewl' doesn't make you cool. It makes you either illiterate or a dork, I can't grok which.

As for the limited edition, f*ck the tin, f*ck the fold out tech tree, and f*ck the marketing a$$h0les who came up with the idea. Even Activision didn't manage to f*ck up putting a decent tech tree in the box with CTP.

I originally pre-ordered the regular version. The tech tree sounds cool, but I looked at the SMAC map or whatever it was once, suspect I will look at the tech tree as often. The videos don't interest me at all, but the tin looks real nice.

That said, the more I thought about, the more I thought I would regret not getting the LE. After all, I have only been pining for this for what, a year or so. So I cancelled my original order and pre-ordered LE.

Just wish ordering the LE got me the game sooner. I also hope there might be a surprise or two with it (scenarios, more civs!)

Well, original box set of some old classics from only 10 years ago sell for about £20 on ebay, but mainly I'm going to get this because, as some people have pointed out before, buying Civ 3 is something of a special event (sounds sad doesn't it), and the Limited Edition just adds to it. I think they should be giving us a little more in it, like a free copy of SMAC or something, but there you go.

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

A printed tech tree was important in the previous Civs (and especially SMAC, where you had no idea what those techs were!). But Civ3 will allow you to view the tech tree on screen for the first time. So I don't think the printed tech tree is very important anymore.

As for me, I'll buy the regular edition on Tuesday. Unless of course it is sold out by the time I get to the store, in which case I'll buy the LE. Whatever I can get my hands on first.
