Try http://apolyton.net/forums/Forum1/HTML/000967.html and there are several other threads lying around too. Don't worry - we all find the TLAs a bit much when we start here...

For the levelest playing field, as it is not spelled out here or in the Abbreviations thread cited, one should add (from my rules.txt):

where x =

K for King in Monarchy
C for Consul in Republic
C for Comrade in Communism
HP for High Priest in Fundamentalism
P for President in Democracy

or improbably,

E for Emperor in Despotism

BTW does everyone equate acronym with abbreviation? My dictionary does not distinguish between them - synonyms they seem to be.

An acronym is a term construed by the first letter(s) of several words like the ones listed here and in the other thread, linked by Scouse Git. They are most often capitalized to show that they are acronyms - and not short for something like an abbreviation.

An abbreviation is short for one or several words, for example abbr., dict. etc. (!) but could also be used to denote an acronym.

I think.

Legman, in other words abbreviation is the broader of the terms, although acronyms like laser and radar which have been absorbed in everyday usage would perhaps not be considered abbreviations.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Yes, abbreviation is the broader term, and I think you're right about the words laser and radar too. They seem to have been accepted as common words now, and I'm sure there are other examples as well.

How about a jeep? I heard it was derived from the letters GP, General Purpose (vehicle), so technically it would be an acronym, but we don't think of it that way.

And:
W for Whosit (any of the above), so a synonym for WLTxD is WLTWD (We Love the Whosit Day)
