Well, I started up my first game, Regent difficulty, Russians, Huge map, 16 civs. Everything is going along fine, i make contact with the english, germans, french, americans, and aztecs. I notice that they are expanding much faster than I but thats ok. Eventually, the Germans, who are due south of me, start amassing swordsman and moving them into my territory. I tell them to withdraw but they declare war. No problem, I can deal with that. Except, on the next turn they managed to get the help of the french and aztecs and ally against me. Suddenly I have 3 enemies to worry about and German swordsmen are marching into Moscow. Ouch.

What a funny coincidence. My first game last night was as the Russians, and I too was wiped out by the Germans at regent difficulty.
Things looked good. I had 4 cities, and access to both horses and iron. The french were to the south, and the germans to the south of them. I had no conflicts, and I was neglecting my millitary. The french built two towns very near to my borders, but my capital city, and cultural centre assimilated them both. Cool!
The germans build a town near me, and start wandering all through my territory. I ask them to leave, and it's war! They attack an undefended town with one horseman, and I get it back. No big deal.
Now come a half dozen more horsemen, retaking the town and then some. Then a half dozen more. And again. Some town trade hands, but not often in my favour.
I'm still used to CivII, so I'm a bit perplexed as to why they're attacking some small towns instead of a big, relatively undefended one. Then I notice that I no longer have access to horses. Soon after, they sweep north, and cut my roads connecting my cities to iron. With no horses or iron left, I am essentially defenceless, and they frind me into the dirt like a bug.
To add insult to injury, in the final, looser screen, Otto Von Bismark proclaims: "All your base are belong to us." I wish I were making this up.
This teaches me some humility. Never in my hundred + games of CivI and II have I lost so convincingly, and I always used to play at the hardest difficulty levels.

What happen!?! Somebody set us up the bomb. We get signal! Main screen turn on. Its you! How are you gentlemen? All your base are belong to us. What you say? Prepare for destruction, make your time. Noooo!!! Ha! Ha! Ha!. Move zig, you know what you doing. Take off every zig for great justice.
Something along those lines anyway. Good to see that the guys at Firaxis have a sense of humour, I didn't believe it until I saw the screenshot.
