New techs, but no new units... Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Okay, this is really bothering me. When i discover a new tech, i can't build any new units. I have played a couple thousand years into the game, and i still have no options on the build menu to choose from but the units i started with. I am doing something wrong?

Maybe you need to have access to some particular resources?
