	Non-Responsive CD-ROM Drive... Suffering from ads?

I'm having an unresponsive CD-ROM drive much to my displesure. Whenver I insert a CD, it just spins for a while, but I can't access it. Its just as if the dsc wasn't there. Can anyone give me a hand with this?

According to the Device manager, its a ATAPI 48X CD-ROM drive.... Can anyone give me a hand?

Obvious first question: Is this just with the Civ3 disk?

If so, it sounds like a Safe-disc kind of problem ... and unless you can find a driver for the CD that handles it properly, I'm not sure how you can get around that.

However, there could be another issue:

My CD drive will go missed at boot-up perhaps 1 in 50 loads. Same with my D: drive. If you don't see the CD folder in your task bar, a simple re-boot will fix it.

That's the best I can do...sorry.

Unfortunately, it wasn't mearly the Civ3 CD. It doesn't respond to my EU CD, my ToT CD, my Ci2 CD, my Imperialism CD, etc.

My CD-ROM drive appears to be functional, but does nothing if you slip in a CD , it just tries to load and fails.... And it ddoes this everytime....

Thanks for the try anyhow.... I'll keep looking for a solution....

Could be a virus. I had a similar problem a while back. Have you received any other weird errors lately? Suspicious E-mails?

I was thinking about that, but Norton apparently hasn't reported any.... Grrr.... But I did recently format my hard drive, could this have somethig to do with it? I've been fiddling with CD-ROM system configs all day to no avail.....

Hmmm. Well, a few months ago my drive simply died. The guy at the computer place (a trusted guy, actually) said: 'Never seen that before.' A newer and faster drive only set me back $80.

Not saying this is the first step to take. Have you tried to delete the drive info from your system sets and letting Windows install the driver again?

Run ASPI check first to see if yo need to update your aspi files. The ASPI checker is also available on that site.

Shadowstrike, I feel your pain...it didn't work for me either but atleast we now have updated drivers!
I have had the exact problem you described on Stronghold, Tribes2, Throne of Darkness and now Civ3 in the last month. All will either not load at all or after loading, refuse to run. My son is experiencing the same effect on his computer. You wouldn't happen to be running a Dell Computer would you?

Shadowstrike, what Operating system are you using? My wife's computer and my son's are both using Win98. I am using Win98SE and the game runs fine.

I'm using Win98 SE..... And I have recently also lost the ability to play EU after I reformatted my HD... I somehow feel that the two events are related.

In case you're wondering, I'm not on a Dell, but I am on a PIII 667, with 256 megs of RAM.
