Its all about preference. I stopped playing Civ3 after about a month. No reason other than i prefer CtP1/2 because i can change almost everything. I can even make the combat system annoyingly random. (and have done so before)

I didn't play any 4x game for longer than a year. I played them all, be it Civilization, Colonization, SMAC or Call to Power with all of their sequels. With "play" I mean intensive, not only occasional nostalgy sessions. The year is over for Civ3, and I play it noticably less than I did, say, half a year ago. I'm playing EU2, 1503AD and several RPGs between my Civ3 games now. May go for MoO3 and RoN, as soon as they are available here. PtW/MP may get me back to business, if it gets fixed. If.

Civ II was the same way. It did evolve over a couple of years!
Yes, years! all the stuff was added later!
I don't see any difference with Civ III, its like tradition.
No other game, has been like Civilization!
Well, not quite! Although they have tried.
CTP -- really. Really not!
Sure after modding and such, but Civ II was the same way.
Where else could one play a scenario of X-COM on a computer game. Civ II you could. Where could one play on Mars with a computer game? With Civ II, you could.
Where could one play against the aliens, Hodadians alert! With Civ II you could.
Where could anyone play anything even close to what Civ II had at the end? No where!!!!!!!
Well, Civ III may just turn out to be the same way, but it takes time!
Please, Sid, Pretty Please!!!!
The New World Order, scenario!!!!
Where is there another game like Civilization!!!!
It's a life!!!!
Actually!!!!
Those bored, are boring themselves!!!!
It's a psych game, and well, you know, that the computer game even with the AI will give you a run for your money!!!
Takes longer playing, afterall, its virtual reality in a sense.

Really!!
I do not think so with other games.
Anyone, can you tell me if an editor in MOO III is there?
It was not in MOO II.
Nope, Civ II has lasted way longer than that.
Although, one may take a break, it bites, to bring you back into it, because, its just one more time, and one more turn, type of game!!!
It's an OS, in a sense!!

Firaxis did improve the polish in CIV 3 over CIV 2, but there is more to a game than polish.

The AI is the best that I have seen from a strategy game, but it can still be outsmarted by a fairly competent player. Diplomacy can use ALOT of work, in fact this is the one area that really needs impovement. The music is ok, i guess. Perfectly balanced? What game have you been playing?

No flaws? No bugs? Read the forums, both of these are ample in CIV 3.
quote: The lack of MP on paper sounds like a bad thing, but the above-and-beyond the call of duty effort Firaxis has taken to perfect the single player game more than makes up for it. Firaxis could have put together a game half as good as Civ III and it still would have been an extremely good game, and sold like hotcakes, but they went to ungodly lengths to make the Civilization III experience one that is truly unforgettable. I thank the maker for the oppurtunity to experience this wonderful moment. In the course of human history, only a very small percent will ever get to play Civ III and I am thankful that I was one of the lucky ones. To all whom find themself at least somewhat in agreement, please keep this near the top, so newbie lurkers may be made aware of the ecstasy that is Civ III. |
I like CIV 3 and it is a clear improvement over CIV 2. However there were some features in CIV2 that they removed from CIV 3 that worked. Cruisers, Stock markets, Engineers, Farmland, Statue of Liberty, and The Eiffel Tower, and the Stealth Fighter (the F-22 version) are a sample of things removed from CIV 3 that worked in CIV 2. And the only reason that I can see for their removal is to distinguish it from CIV 2. Bad move IMO. Civ 3 is a great game, but it is far, far from perfect.

Cyclotron:
1. The AI is good but it can use some improvement
2. Wall Street is underpowered and can only be built once, Stock markets were available in every city in CIV 2. Also, they are back for PTW, so I think Firaxis realized the mistake of removing them in CIV3.
3. Engineers also had 2 moves as well as increased working speed, and they looked much better than the ancient age workers.
4. Farmland (and supermarket) were replace by railroad tile bonuses. Another mistake, also rectified in PTW. (with supermarkets at least)
5. Why should ONLY religious civs be able to change Governments on a whim? Not overpowering in my book, putting the SOL back in the game would greatly increase the balances between the CIV's IMO. (Militaristic trait is watered down by Sun Tzu's, Scientific by Newtons and Copernicus, Commercial by Adam Smiths and Wall Street, Expansionist by available land to explore, Industrious by lack of worker tasks, what exactly waters down the religious trait?...Nothing!)
5. The Eiffel tower may be useless in MP, but it would be very useful in SP and you could give it some serious culture points to balance it out.
