On a fairly easy level, my civ is a battleground for the Greeks and the Chinese. Battles all over the place. I'm just lying low and trying not to get in their way. Sure is fun to watch.

Watching the replay of a Warlord game (Huge map, 8 civs), I noticed there were battles taking place on islands that I hadn't even discovered. Late in the game when I had made contact with everyone they were using diplomacy to backstab each other just as often as they try to do it to you.
So yep, the AI nations will try to whack each other.

Most definitely they go at each other. World wars actually. Send explorers out and you'll see the battles.
