Shall we open school for those who speak spanish poorly or not at all? I'm interested in linguistics, and this seems like a place in which learning would be enjoyable.

As a fellow student, I suggest we start with those all-important verbs.

This is how the first group of regular verbs works. Some other verbs form the "Primera conjugación": cantar (to sing), hablar (to speak), saltar (to jump), ganar (to win), llegar (to arrive)...

3 forms of verbs, all conjugated the same way, correct? I remember something about some verbs changing vowels in certain conjugations, too. Is there a general rule to follow?

Eso me recuerda una conversación que tuve con Fiera hace poco en la que yo sostenía que importaba poco si algo estaba o no reconocido por la academia de la lengua, lo que importaba en realidad imho era si estaba o no ampliamente extendido, como es el caso del voseo.

Lo que pasa, Waku, es que como no era 'academico' no lo estudiabamos. Concuerdo en que lo importante es si se usa o no. Lo usamos todo el tiempo de todos modos. I mean que quizas ahora el vos ya sea 'academico'.

Pues lo de irregulares es que no siguen las terminaciones... AFAIK los verbos 'ar' tienen todos la misma terminacion en cada tense, lo mismo que los 'er' y los 'ir'.

Si, pero los verbos son mas importante que otras palabras!

Mi recuerdo something about el preterito, que no esta (?) en el ingles o holandes. Es acado best hablar en el pasado y el presente?

Marquis, we've got lots of pretéritos, trust me, you don't wanna know all of them...

But I guess you are probably referring to "yo amaba, tú amabas, él amaba...", which is "I used to love", in English. It also stands for the use of would in "When I was a child, I would go to school everyday", I think.

The pretéritos are various past forms. For example:

Pretérito imperfecto: Yo amaba (I used to love)
Pretérito perfecto simple: Yo amé (I loved)
Pretérito perfecto compuesto: Yo he amado (I have loved)
Pretérito pluscuamperfecto: Yo había amado (I had loved)
Pretérito anterior: Yo hube amado (I had loved)

And these are only the "Modo Indicativo" pretéritos! There are another two for the "Modo Subjuntivo". The differences of meanings between the forms are very sutile, but they exist.

I told u Marquis, a nightmare, te diré más, sometimes we don't even know the name of the tense we're using (yo al menos nunca me aprendí bien los malditos verbos ).

eso es porque no se usa por alla abajo (Por España tampoco, la verdad). El que es interesante es el perfecto 'compuesto'; muy habitual en España e inexistente en el cono sur.

(*nunca habia oido llamar perfecto simple al indefinido )

Sí, a mí cuando los estudiaba de niño me fastidiaba que en el libro pusiese "perfecto simple" y mis padres lo llamasen "indefinido"...

I'll stick with the present and simple past for now... Maybe once I learn enough verbos it will slowly fall into place...

I'm afraid that "cocear" refers to a beast, not to a man. A horse "cocea", a man "da patadas" or "patea". The correct sentence would have been:
"Loren, tu hijo, juega hoy al fútbol y dice: "¡Gol!"
Or:
"Loren, tu hijo, practica hoy el fútbol y dice: "¡Gol!"
