Reverse Apocalypse? Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

Hey all. New here.

I had a very interesting scenario idea.
In a normal Civ2 game, global warming is a very bad thing. What if it weren't?
Global warming as far as i can tell, switches plains and grasslends and such for deserts and swamps and the like.
If the stats and pictures for these terrains were changed/switched, would that cause a net positive result of global warming?

This could be used to interesting effect. Imagine a desert planet where industry affects the environment in such a way that it becomes more fertile(weakened ozone lowers temperatures?). Pollution would still be negative, but you could rename it "turmoil" or such to signify the chaos of an rapid environmental shift. Nukes could be called "Genesis Missiles" or something.
Me thinks this sort of thing could get quite interesting. (Nuke your enemies and kill their engineers, but safeguard your own cities to avoid temporary slowdown.)

What do you think?

Check out the Dune series by Herbert. Your basic idea of turning a desert planet into an oasis is one that he explored in detail with some of his books. Gives some excellent unit ideas and descriptions also.

I haven't started doing much original scenario's for Civ yet as I'm still doing research and hunting interpolated maps for the one I want to do eventually.

After erm, experimentation in the WW2 scenario involving setting off tons of nuclear warheads, our scientists predict that a civ2 planet with *extreme* global warming with revert to entirely swamp and ocean.

and if the "swamp" terrain was actually a -good- thing, that would encourage human players to use an even more extreme approach to nuclear warfare than the AI.

See "WW79 Scenario" for examples of AI approach to nuclear warfare.

EDIT: Or even allow their own cities to be polluted for long periods of time.

Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

If the entire map becames swampy, the AI would build no more cities.

Put an end to popups!

No matter how good the terrain is or what the AI values are, the AI will only build new cities on plains and grasslands.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

Well, that can be changed. I once got the AI build a city in the middle of a desert. In principle, the AI builds cities on plains and grassland only, but only because that's what the scenario/savegame file tells them to be fertile terrain.

Got spare money?

I'm not sure the "fertility" byte in the saved game file would work, because the game might recalculate it when it changes the terrain for global warming.

But while we're on the subject, has anyone unraveled any more information about this byte than what's in Allard's word document? I've been trying to figure out how to get my mapcopy utility to correctly set this byte, but I haven't had much success.

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

If you can change the stats of pollution, perhaps we can make a Civ2 version of CTP's 'Ecobomb' (or whatever it's called)
