What is the BEST computer game purchase you've made? Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

What is the BEST computer game purchase you've made?

The criteria for this is totaly up to you.

The first game would have to be CIV, it introduced me into the great time wasting thing that is known as computer gaming.

Honorable mentions would have to be Deus Ex (damned CD is broken so now I can't play again), Caesar 3 (many hours spent on this game), and Sim City 2.

My first choice will be the same as everyone on this site: Civ 2 (duh)
Second best: M1 Tank Platoon 2 - I got it for $10 and it's great
(it was cheap because the manual had gone missing - meaning I had to work out the controls by bashing each combination on the keyboard & writing down what happened )

Definitely Civ2, the only regret I have about this game is that I didn't buy it immediately; I waited almost 6 months because the screenshots on the back looked so horrible

And UT is fantastic too, I still love to play CTF-Face and CTF-Coret...

you did say purchase , didn't you?

my best purchase ever, no question. was a pair of 2packs I got for 10 each one day at Kmart.

one 2pack contained Civilization and Colonization , starting me on the path I am currently on. Civ2 and 3 are sequels to that addiction.

The other 2pack contained Master Of Orion and Xcom: Ufo Defense , both fantastic games.

all of these games remain on my hard drive to this day, and may do so permanently.

Like most everybody else in this thread, the best computer game I purchased was either Civ 1 or Civ 2 (take your pick). Master of Orion and X-Com were also great games, but to name a few that haven't been mentioned already would compel me to also list

1. Might and Magic: World of Xeen
2. Heroes of Might and Magic (2 or 3)
3. Rollercoaster Tycoon
4. Starcraft
5. The Pro-Pinball series

Civ 2 undoubtably (civ1 was actually aquired through er, "other" means in about 1991 I think but I have purchased all of the others since so I don't feel too bad about it).
I think I appreciate it mostly because of its endurance however. Scenarios have kept it in business for me for 5 years now. very few others are even comparable, being far more recent and IMO unproven wrt the "Test of Time" (pun intended ).

Also near the top of the list was a wargames classics compilation which introduced me to such favourites as Command HQ, Clash of steel etc.

I think I got this exact same pack when pre-ordering Civ2: ToT. Xcom, however was the A/P version called UFO: Enemy Unknown

Alien Legacy would have made the above list had I purchased it, but my friend lent me the disks, and never asked for them back... so he technically gave them to me, so that's about the only game I've acquired without paying for it, and legally too.
Pirates would be there, if I'd paid for it.

In terms of sheer number of hours played, it's too close to tell among SimCity Classic, Railroad Tycoon, and Civ.

Other games I played a huge number of hours include M.U.L.E., Archon I, Archon II, UFO: Enemies Unknown.

Games I played a lot that I didn't buy - not what you think, they are free - are: rogue, Omega, and Moria.

There have been a few that were well worth the purchase; SMAC, BotF, Baldur's Gate 1&2 and others. A classic pack containing RR Tycoon, Civilization, Colonization and Pirates Gold did consume a lot of my time too.

But the game I've spent the most time playing is Daggerfall (4000hrs+) and I still haven't completed the main quest.

Imagine "Civ" played across three dozen worlds simultaneously. Now, imagine it costs only $6.

Civ2 - I don't think I need to explain.

Deus Ex - I was glued to my computer for 2 weeks playing this game, only stoping to sleep for 4 hours a day and to get food. Deffinately an amazing game.

Half-Life - Awsome single player, and great mods that keep the game alive.

StarCraft - One of the first game I ever played online, despite the complete retards who make up its community, it is a great multiplayer game.

Regarding Emperor of the Fading Suns, UR asked "How long does it take for you to play one turn?" Not that long, actually; comparable to Civ. The game map may include dozens of worlds, but you aren't operating on more than three or four at a time; at least, I never did when I played. Also, the care and feeding of each individual city is a lot less involved than Civ.
