Playing as Americans in Huge World map default scenario (the one that shipped with the game) with 16 civs.
I got as far as 1720 AC. Saved the game and quit.
Now when I try to load it here's what I get:
DataIO operation System Error: TILE
In a messagebox with a OK button on it. I click OK but the box keeps on coming back. Not possible to resume game.
I have win 2000
Athlon 1.2 GHz
256 MB RAM
Geforce 2 Ultra
Sound Blaster Live
Anybody at Fireaxis interested in taking a look at the saved file? see if you can figure out what went wrong?

I am getting the same bug, but instead of TILE, I get CITY.
I managed to get to the year 1955.

Same problem for me, but it was on a large map at 210 AD! The system would just stop responding. I decided to just reinstall and see if that worked.

Reinstalling didn't fix it. I haven't tried all my saved games, but the ones that I have tried lock up the system.
(CTL-ALT-DEL shows "not responding") This worked fine until yesterday, and I have no idea of what may have changed. No new software installed.
Any ideas?

Make sure that you have free space on your C drive. I ran into a similar issue... It would try to load save games, get to about 57% and then spit out an error about some given dll. When starting a new game, I could play for a while then it would lock up on me. I have CivIII installed to my D: drive, but I figure it's some issue with Civ using swap space on the C: drive. I freed up about 500 wasted megs on my C: drive (more than enough by far, I'm sure) and I haven't had any problems with it since then.

Asides for a few problems and glitches...
I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!
