slow game play in the modern era Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

by real slow I mean each turn takes at least 2-3 minutes and maybe as many as 5 minutes between each turn. I think the problem may have been happening from the start of the game, but just not as noticeable until the modern era.
I am playing a game on a huge map with 7 other civs. I have tried changing game resolutions and disabling all animations and sound, but nothing seems to have an affect at all.
machine specs:
PIII - 500
256 MB RAM
GeForce2 32MB
Win 2k with plenty of disk space
DX8.0a

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Here are "real" numbers:
I end my turn
about 90 seconds later I get a pop-up saying "x declared war on y"
another minute later I get to build stuff, after changing production, its another 90 seconds until I get to move my units

That's a whopping total of four minutes, just staring at my screen

On two seperate trials, one at 1600x1200, music on and the other at 1024x768, music off, the times were almost identical.
Oh yeah, nothing running in the backround at all.

This really sucks! to play only 20 turns takes at least 1 hour 20 minutes, not counting moving any units.

AAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Any ideas?

Here is my fix:

Start a new game on a standard map and see if the problem happens again. I think the slowdown may be due to all the AI units that are being moved each turn. I have updated all drivers and all the rest, but nothing I do seems to make any difference at all. What are your PC specs?
