Yeah, I post only in the OT... except for an odd post in S&D... and now that the OT is down I've posted complaining about it here which has slightly raised my post count, but not too much... like 10 posts.

actually, i did go to sleep at 3:30(8:30est) and left the OT closed but we still had 500-550 people and the server had not calmed down

i left a note to the others to open it when the amount of users got lower.

Nooo... original reply erased, it was about how if MarkG would have been the only person with the ability to close/open the OT, then we'd be screwed anytime the traffic didn't lighten up around dinner time here

Considering I wake up just in time for class/breakfast/lunch, and get back in the afternoon, I fear I shan't see much of the OT in the comming weeks.

Can anyone honestly tell me that an increase in traffic wasn't expected in the advent of Civ3? Why weren't there any plans in place to cope with the increase?

There was foreknowledge that there would be a traffic increase -- we never said that we weren't expecting one. However, exactly how much and for how long were not known nor could it be measured -- too many variables and not all of them had clear values.

This is a common situation for web server owners, administrators and users. We hope that you can appreciate the difficulty and complexity of this dilemma and thank you for your patience and understanding.

But Dan, you were the ones who kept us informed about several peaks in a row! And you were the ones who could know when the servers would "blow up"! You know the capacity, you saw visitors continuously increasing, yet you did nothing but stare!

Now how complex is this dilemma? Because I only think about 2 solutions!
1- Gamestats invests in extra hardware, so it's a matter of a small amount of time before the problem is fixed.
2-No money, no extra hardware. You just ban the occasional visitors who won't even realise what's going on.
And close those spammer's forum called "Off-Topic"!

Of course, I understand that it's not your (Dan Q) fault. It's Gamestats.

actually, we didnt know the capacity of the server, nor how much each decision would affect the situation

for example, today i turned off avatars for everyone. i didnt and couldnt know if it would make a small or a big difference. however it has made a difference and today we were able to not close the civ3 forums for the guests even though we made a new peak....

Just because you can't predict things scientifically is no reason not to plan...or at least contingencyt plan. The traffic increase could be reasonably expected. It would have been more of a surpirse if we hadn't had such an increase.

Actions should have been taken to determine the capacity of the server.

If you think ahead, you have more options.

just because there are "multiple variables" is no excuse for not planning.

Just because you can't predict things scientifically is no reason not to plan

We have crossed the fine line from constructive criticisms, and even criticisms in themselves, to insinuations in my opinion and I will not debate or argue on these terms. Why? Because I do not feel that one can come to a mutual resolution under these conditions. If I come across as being a bit terse in my comments to follow it's not because I do not value input or that I wish to ignore it, but rather a combination of other factors. First, it's been a very stressful month thus far on matters not related to Apolyton and I won't go into details as we all have stresses and crosses to bear be they fair or unfair. Second, and more to the point, I am getting tired of having to defend myself and Apolyton's position over and over again when I, Markos or someone else on staff have already addressed it especially in recent days.

I never said that we did not have a plan -- I am certain I have made this clear before. We have always had a plan and we continue to have one now -- if we didn't, measures that we have implemented that have been spelled out in forum announcements, forum threads and the "About" section of our website would have either not surfaced or not surfaced as quickly as they did. What I am getting at is that no plan can attest for every possible contingency or to the extent to which a contingency may come into play. Now that we are aware of the present situation... and again, I am re-stating what I have said before here... we are working with the appropriate parties to try and address them.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Dan, I think that alot of the frustration being thrown your way stems from a lack of communication on the part of the administration. The measures taken thus far are little more than stop gaps in a problem that will likely get worse as Civ3 gets released in more countries. I think if someone would just tell us what is being done to increase the amount of traffic Apolyton can handle on a more permanent basis most of the people complaining/annoying you would cease.
