It's critical to our beta testing. Right now we can determine if a bug is Mac-only or also in the PC by loading up save files on each and comparing.
In Alpha Centauri, the play-by-e-mail games were basically just people sending savegames to each other. If in the future Civ3 adds that option (which I definitely do NOT know for sure), we need to be ready to deal with that. The safest way is to cover our ass now and make them cross-platform from the start.
