Turn: awaiting
So just so I know, do you need to download those graphics for everything to work. I'll do it on my home machine just to see them but on my work laptop I try to minimize non-work stuff

OK - what happens if you don't load the files?
I moved all the files to my desktop and then ran the game.
When you first fire up the game, it will use the five slots that are in your latest .ini file, so you might get Usurper as Deirdre, one as Yang, one as Zak, etc (depending on what was the last game you played) - however after you have saved and exited that turn, your system will not allow another game to load (as your .ini file now has Warrior, Overlord and Preserve as factions in it - and you don't have these in your alpha file.
Worse, your system hangs, and you can only exit the unusable game screen through ctl/alt/del - end task - of s..m..a..c.. and again ctl/alt/del - end task - of terranx. Your system is then unfrozen with your correct resolution.
You can get round that by going into your alpha centauri.ini file and manually resetting these 3 clone factions to real ones - then you can load another game.
If you install just the three clone .txt files, you remove that problem (ie you can save, exit, and play another game without text editing) but during that alien game the three clone factions will all have Gaian characteristics - not a problem in the early game, but a real problem after contact - and bases - have been established (all base bnames will be the same for the 3 clone factions)
The only foolproof method is to load the graphics files as well as the .txt files. (but obviously the occasional turn could be played on a different PC provided you change your .ini file afterwards)

The Battle for Manifold Seven
If there had been a Manifold 7, what might it have looked like ... what alien structures might be there, and in what form - and here Black Sunrise has given me the benefit of his ideas - so expect the unexpected
And I need 3 e-mail addresses before we can go much further:
Rastapopoulos
radman
Flotax
Can you send me something (anything) to:
linfrew@aol.com
Thanks
G.
