To all those in the UK Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

Hi there! Civ 3 just got delivered to my shop, and so of course I borrowed it and took it straight home!

Having just played it for few hours I can honestly say it IS very good indeed! I was a bit worried by some of the comments being thrown around, and was half expecting some obvious bugs/flaws. I can't say I have noticed any so far though.

Admitedly, having only played it for a few hours, these really are only first impressions.

If you were having any doubts as whether to buy it or not though, I can only say - it is worth buying. It does play differently to the earlier civ games, I would say it requires a greater deal of thought - particularly warfare. However, this is a good thing as far as I am concerned.

I can't say I noticed the corruption being as crippling as some made out, or the computers cities exploding across the map. The thing you have to keep in mind when playing it is that it IS NOT civ 1 or 2. You will have to relearn some of your basci Civ'ing skills for this one - buts thats good surely? A new challenge, not just the same old thing...

Anyway, I need some sleep. I'll probably post some other comments about the game, if enough hasn't been said about it already.

Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

Your shop ?
You work for a major high street chain which will have a branch close to me ?
Livingston is a bit far to go, and it is dark up there.

Shops Increase the size of your Attachments

I called up a few shops and they told me that they would be getting the game in tomorrow (thursday) but they couldn't sell it to me until Friday, is that silly or what???

I have no doubt that the quality of the highland shop assistants north of the border is far superior to our slim hipped, southern, nancy-boy, 'spotty', breath-monsters who serve down south.

Anyway there is something about a large hairy bloke in a skirt that leaves you in no-doubt about his masculinity and non-spottiness.

which is why, MisterMuppet, I volunteered your services as 'spotty assistant grabber' ... (just in case he turns out to be one of our northern kilted brothers on secondment in London).

It works.....shame I couldn't get rid of the wife!

With all the posts over the last few weeks regarding problems installing etc... I will admit that I was very nervous that the game would not install or run correctly.

..BUT IT WORKS PERFECTLY !!!!

The only blemish on my otherwise utopian CIV-BLISS Thursday night session was the intrusion of the wife.

I had prepped her for having Friday Night to myself ... game arrives early.... but also as the wife is expecting my company

...so I only managed to play 3-4 turns ..

AAARRRRHHHHH the frustration

...hohum....at least now I have tonight to look forward..and expectation is always better than the reality.

Based on the 3 turns I played - it looks great
Only downside - I wish I had a 17" or 19" inch monitor

But that's my fault not the games.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I managed to play from about 8pm until 2:00am
I am now a little tired, but it was worth it.

Started off feeling it was pretty good but a bit of an anti-climax. I guess it's true about what other people have said about your own perceptions of what you wanted from Civ III. Towards the end of my session I started to feel a lot better about it, and to be honest, would have played it all night if I didn't have work today.

I'm sure it will get better and better, the more I play it. I think I need to read the manual too.

Have fun.

I am so glad you said that...I never managed to get into SMAC and I really really don't want this to be an anti-climax. When I finish my session tonight I want to feel that the only reason I stopped was because I need to sleep - NOT because of CIV apathy!

Yes, I totally agree.... I actually downloaded the Manual in PDF format about 3 weeks ago! But I am definately going to re-read it fully (1/2 way through 2nd reading now - trains are great for that )

yeah, a good read of the manual is definetly in order. The whole resoures thing is quite important to how you play the whole game - essentially defining how you interact with other civ to trade the ones you dont have.

I'll have to read the bit about establishing sea routes... my resources are running out on me!

PS Whats wrong with a kilt? If I want to prance around the house in nothing but my Sporran and leotard, wheres the harm?
