	Upgrading… Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

In my first (and so far the only one) game I met an upgrading problem.
I am isolated on an island and I don’t have iron at all. By the time I managed to trade iron I discovered that I cannot upgrade my spermen. The reason was that I discovered Gunpowder and I have saltpeter. In the build menu in the city there is musketman and not pikeman.

Did someone else met a similar problem?

You should be able to upgrade past pikemen to musketmen. It will cost you more, though. In order to upgrade, you have to have barracks in your city.

I tried again.
I have a spearman in a city with a barrack and saltpeter in the resurces box. I had the Gunpowder tech but still I can't upgrade the unit.
Could be because I don't have iron?

Hey, there is one more requirement. You need enough money to complete the upgrade. I've had the same problem. I will be able to upgrade the first unit, then money gets below the upgrade cost of a second unit and the upgrade icon disappears. The cost to upgrade from Spearman to Musketman is around 120 (without Leonardo's Workshop). I think that's 40 to go from Spearman to Pikemen and 80 to go from Pikeman to Musketman. These upgrade costs are astonomical without Leonardo's Workshop!! Does anyone know where the upgrade costs are hidden? Or the actual cost to build a unit? The upgrade cost is probably the difference between the build cost of the higher rated unit minus the build cost of the lower rated unit. I think these costs are in the Civilopedia!

was able to get "education" through the great library.
as this is the tech wich makes the GL obsolete, i don't think
this is supposed to hapen.

I had enough money to upgrade all my units (OK, I didn't have that many units ).

alva848 : I think you post in the wrong thread. Any way I got that 'education' tech from GL too.

I had a similar problem, can't upgrade my horseman to knight when playing Chinese, so they were pretty useless with pikeman all over the place
