Ghengish: theres no way to fix someone in their starting location. its "player 1 2 3" etc not "japanese start, chinese start, etc". i think this is a move on firaxis's part to show that its the region thats important, not the ppl theirein... i had france in USA once, it was cool i just imagined what it would be like if our culture was more french. (saves me the money for flying to quebec ;P)

And thadd, im going to try out the map from a different start loc, prolly quit/releoad until i get china or north america. as far as im concerned the middl east is done perfectly. who cares if theres so muc damn incense, what you cant trade may be wasted but that just allows for regional specialization, which is pretty much what the world of today does.

i will post here in about 15 hours or something when im done with my next one. the rise of the chinese empire will be my next epic =D

But, but...your projection has the entire globe on a flat map. Looks like you'd fall off the edge of the world if you go too far to the left or right. I'll believe it when I see it, which should be right away, since I have to abandon my current game due to a crash that I can't seem to get around.

The possibility of maps... Tired of ads?

Wouldn't it be 'interesting' if a map wasn't a 'static' map?

What if... you could build a map containing continents/islands that migrated in some fashion... even merged with each other in some way? A land bridge appears and survives for only 10/20/30 turns? A continent that slowly revolves. The possibilities would make for some interesting scenarios.

Just an idle thought.

And just play the map - don't worry about how wrapping around works and such ... I don't think anybody who played my map has had any complaints yet about how the wrap-around works, but if you play and you do just le me know!

Thanks for your praise Hunter ... I've had a setback (that is, errrr ... I've been playing my world map for the past few days ) in my Pangea map but I hope to get it up soon ....... I hope to start prelimenary testing on pangea some time today or later tonight.

ALSO !!! I was thinking of creating a panel of people to help me playtesting a map. I don't like the idea of putting up multiple versions of any of my maps; I want them done right so people don't have to keep re-downloading new versions.
If ANYBODY is interested in playtesting maps for me let me know VIA e-mail or ICQ or PM here on Apolyton and I'd be happy to e-mail you my maps so you can play and give me your vital feedback!!!

I like your idea, but thats up to the mod people, sadly, not me. But there are many other great things that COULD be done with time changes to terrain .... one thing I would like to see is the look of roads changing ... have the old brown roads in the ancient times, upgraded to a cobble-stone looking road in the middle ages and eventually highways and pavement in the modern times .. that would be cool

Thanks for all of your comments!
Good gaming

NEWS FLASH

Just letting everyone that has been following this thread know that I have solid plans for my next two maps ... The first will be of the earth as it appeared in the early or lower Cretaceous period (about 140 mya).

After reading and reviewing maps, I found that a pure Pangea world wouldn't be all that fun to play on ... after all, it would just be a big silly island

Attached is a small black&white picture of what the landmasses basically look like during this period. I think it will prove to be an amazing map to play ...

My second map is ... well, is still a secret If you've read through this thread, you'll know that it will be a future world but the details and a view of the ideas/theories that i've chosen will remain a mystery for now

HOWEVER!!! If anybody wants to be a play tester for these maps, let me know! You'll be the first people to see my future map after all ... not to mention my next map which should be available for downloading in a few days

As for Alex ( or the 'thadd' as you people like to refer to me ) i think its time for a well deserved nap before i finish up my map and start play testing

Cheers everyone!
~Alex

( forgot to attach the pic above )

I should also note that on this map all of the small islands have been lost, and many of the lakes and smaller waterways are gone as well ... when I post the map, I'll put an actual shot as before

I'll help you test your maps, Alex.

I just started your New Look map last night, and it's a lot of fun. I began as Persia in Italy. I had Europe and northern Asia all to myself. India was isolated in Britain. Babylon and France were in the Middle East, relatively close together. Oddly enough, the Zulus were in southern Africa. Today I discovered Japan occupying N. America. S. America seems empty, although I haven't explored it completely. (So I haven't had the chance to sail off the edge!

I like this map because it mixes the familiar Earth with the slight unpredictability of the novel projection. Great fun exploring.

Regarding the Cretaceous map, I'm not sure what you meant by the missing islands and waterways, but I would imagine they were there, geologists just don't know enough about their location yet, if they ever do figure it out. So I'd say you could take artistic license and add a few rivers and lakes here and there if you think they would improve gameplay.

What I mean Purp is that on my little picture, you can't see most of the smaller islands and seas ... they exist on my map and they did exist (as far as i know in most cases)...

something strange Tired of ads?

ThadAlex

Like everyone else, I really like the map. I'm in the middle of a game (Regent Level, 7 other civs) and playing as the Babylonians, and I pretty much "own" North America!

A few strange things, maybe it's just me, but my capital has grown to size 12 - without an aqueduct!!! I didn't even have Construction as a tech when it was size 10. Did you do anything else besides create a new map?

This is the first time this has ever happened. Has anyone else noticed this?

Any city next to a fresh water source (may just be a river, I'm not sure) doesn't need an aqueduct to exceed size 6, though a hospital is still necessary to advance past 12.

Jeeze guys, one project at a time !!

My future world map will be up in a few days ... it still has a long way to go and since its the weekend and my girlfriend is in town, work is going to be kinda 'slow' to say the least ... if you get my drift

*LOL* and yes, my girlfriend reads these posts and she will kill me soon ... so how about this! IF YOU DON'T WANT JOANNA TO KILL ALEX SO HE CAN CONTINUE TO POST MAPS HERE, LET US KNOW!!!

These forums are too much fun ...

ANYway ... Your Mars idea is a very good one ... moving away from the Earth is something I'm looking in to ... But I want to cover the basics first (past, present and future). If you have any ideas about a Mars map Granicus, then by all means post 'em and let me know! Input is vital ( as I think i might have mentioned once or twice ), and I'll be sure that when I get around to making it, you'll be the first to get your hands on the map to playtest it and tell me what you think.

As for now, Joanna and Alex are going to bed after our movie/fireplace lounging night ... Sleep well everyone! (although I know most of you are still playing Civ 3 even though it might be 3, 4 or 5 in the morning where you are )

Good Gaming!
Cheers ...

Don't worry, I'm in no hurry. Just wanted to throw the idea out there while I was still thinking about it. Anyways, I've found some websites that might be of use. The first two would go together, being topographical maps of Mars coupled with a short description of where the waters would flow. The third link is to a site dedicated to a trilogy of books centered around the terraforming of Mars. It has a really good map that shows the oceans as they are in that book series and has the elevations colored for the rest of the land. It's very nicely done.

Here they are for your viewing pleasure:

So far one complaint- I began on some island as the Russians- an island with a total of maybe 10 hexes- I'd really remove that starting position due to the fact that anyone who starts there is screwed as you can only build just one city there and there's no about 4 prereqs for Map Making.

Strange ... The only islands I can think of are the British Isles and Japan, so I'll see what I can do for making those starting locations better gameplay-wise. I'd rather try to remedy the situation before I go and change an entire start location.

Also, in random map games that I've played I've found that you can take a different course of victory no matter your starting location and still be successful ... One map I played I was in the middle of the ocean with no way of accessing land until the middle ages and the naval advances therein. I played the game from start to finish with only 5 cities and I won a Cultural victory because my capitol accumulated the 20k in Culture required.

I find that bending your strategy given the starting location and terrain is one of the things that just make the game all the more interesting, and your victories all the more rewarding

Good Gaming, and thanx for your comments!

That's really interesting- and yeah, I agree that every path *seems* viable- I still haven't tried for a diplo victory yet.

I believe it was probably Japan I began on, but with the lack of places to build I'd get stuck with only one city (maybe two if I squeezed) until I secured galleys to transport me across the Sea of Japan.

I played this map as the aztecs starting in britan.

at first I was kinda bummed, I saw a bunch of other guys gobbling up europe and scandnavia. It was around 0 AD that I finally got map making and really got to contact other civs.

I was able to make contact with a civ every now and then when they strayed into my view.

after about 500 AD I really started to dig this map and being in england.

it's kinda realisitic, the britons didn't have that much contact with the rest of the world until ceaser invaded. so it felt right.

starting in england is tough at first because you are isolated, but later that turns into a big advantage. kinda like it's supposed to, historically

Rock on, Thaddeus! You're a true cartographer. I'm looking forward to your "Future Earth" map. I've also wondered how changes in sea level would affect the look of a world map. Have you ever noticed the still perceptible riverbeds branching out on the floor of the Indian Ocean from the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent? Makes you wonder if the sealevel was once much lower; some scientists think it was.
