Hey all
I've seen and played every world map that has ever come out for Civilization games (that is, every one that i've known about), and although they are all fun and interesting, they are ALL THE SAME !!!
Oh, I know ... differences in accuracy and such ... but honestly, does it really matter? The world becomes so generalized when its divided into a series of tiles that making a perfect map is, in my opinion, quite impossible.
So I set out to do something different
Below you'll see a screenshot for my Huge map of the world ... The first thing that should strike you as being .. 'odd' ... is the view. I'm getting sick of this typical map view, and I wanted to change it. Now I KNOW what all of you historians out there will say - that the view makes no sense, that landmasses aren't proper and so on and so forth (i studied history and geography, trust me, i know !) ... but the IDEA (and this is the important part) behind the map was to CREATE A MAP THAT RESEMBLED THE EARTH for that FAMILIAR FEEL, but to make it FUN and INTERESTING TO PLAY ON.
IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME, JUST READ THE REVIEWS THROUGHOUT THE THREAD
If you download this map, please try it out and let me know how you felt the game progressed! a simple or is fine, but any info you can give me would be great ... I'd be glad to alter the map if you find it is too unbalanced for one faction, if there are problems with waterways and the like .... just let me know!
This is my first map that made it to the "complete" stage (for Civ 3 at least) so be honest ..... I can take it !
Good gaming all!
Cheers
~Alex

Think its a good idea???

The continents won't be very different in 10,000 years. Try a few million and then you'll be talking. You should be able to find a few good online sources on continental drift.

really cool looking map! I will try it out soon, but I just wanted to post that (after looking at it in the editor) there seems to be plenty of resources/luxuries, perhaps even too much. Hows the trading between civs?
and wow that's a lot of tundra! i can just see it already, the AI colonizing antartica and planting forests and laying tracks everywhere |
Okay .. about trading between civs :
I haven't had a problem ... there are lots of resources, yes, but they aren't spread all over the place like they are in most other civ 3 world maps that i've seen ... they are clustered so even though they are many, chances are unless you're very expansionistic and quick at doing so, you'll only control one or two resources. Also, the map was designed to play all 16 civs, so with many resources there is barely enough to satisfy a trade to every civ, and in many cases, there are very few. So trade, I find at least, balances out.
As for antarctica, I haven't as of yet had a problem. The only civ that I've so far seen colonizing antarctica was the player in the zulu start location, and that was only once out the 5 games i've played on my map. Maybe on Diety its different, I dunno
Either way, thanks for your comments and I'll take in to consideration what you said. I hope what I mentioned here clearned up a few things on my reasonings
Cheers!
~Alex

ok so the last 5 hours of my life have just completely sailed right by me playing your map, thadd.
And I have to say that hands down it is the most FUN map I have played out of every one I downloaded from Civfanatics and here, which is just about everything.
I am playing on regent with the egyptians, 10 civs. in the beginning I was mostly in the persian gulf area, but the nice placing of the excessive incense allowed for lots of riches so I moved to conquer babylon, which was in the egyptian spot. After about 1000 years or so of the pope strategy (0 science, use exrta money to buy and then resell techs to everyone. keeps you even with all opponents and allows for massive amounts of city improvements/military/expansion early) I got the babylonian capital, where thebes ought to be, thus securing the whole of the middle eastern region.
I dont have Iron, but its present enough to trade for the best dollar on market. The design of the map seems to allow every civilization to get nice, fertile cities, while also getting enough production and more than enough present resources to make it. I had horses, and being the gyptians it was nice as the UU is based off of horses. later I agreed to a trade agreement with zulus for iron for my excess horses (zululand is basically europe/western russia) thus allowing me to not have to conquer for the strategic resources I need, but rather to make friends. it adds a whole new layer to the game of picking your friends based on what they got/ will have.
my great war in the middle east is over with it unified under an egyptian banner. I have converted to a democracy and the size will allow for the high tech improvements to roll in, nd once on my feet I ought to be a dominant power. cant wait till i get to sell off the oil...
Thanks thadd, for putting together a different style map and writing my own little epic..

I don't see why you are saying that your map is unrealistic - that particular projection you use is more realistic than the one most people use for their world maps - by placing the north pole in the middle you make the arctic more strategically important for a conflict between civilizations on the North American and Asian continents, which is historically correct. The continents also seem to be proportioned correctly.

Beautiful work, Alex!
I have a couple of basic questions. Please forgive me if the answers are obvious. In a brief look at the map editor, I couldn't figure out how to get a global view. Is it possible? Also, your map looks like a flat one--I thought that couldn't be done. |
Purple,
I'm not sure if i understand your questions, but i'll try my best to answer them for you.
If by 'global view' you mean the pic i posted above, you cannot. Sadly, they haven't created a way to view the map in the editor. In order to get the picture I did, I had to start a game and then immediately hit RETIRE (thus losing the game). This took me the summary screen where it shows the map of the world. I took a screenshot, cut out the map section and saved it and posted it here
As for your 'flat one' comment, i assumed you mean a world where you cannot wrap around. In reply, i don't know if that is possible but on my world, you can indeed wrap around.
