A different problem with Detonator driver Tired of ads?

First of all, a disclaimer: my system is fairly outdated. Here it is:

K6-2 500
64 RAM
Viper v770 32 MB video card
WinME

Apart from the general slow behavior of the system (which is expected, and I will get more RAM next month), Civ3 was VERY slow, with Civilopedia and Advisor screens taking 4-5 seconds to open, and crankiness all over (I think I won´t mention the scrolling problem...).

Well, some people reported that on their systems (more outdated than mine) they were able to play the game without so much trouble (of course, it was not smooth as silk, but it was bearable).

Realizing that my video card chipset is from Nvidia (Riva TNT), I decided to check it. It was not even running with Detonator drivers!

So I installed the 21.xx drivers, expecting some miracle while I waited for new RAM, and guess what? The game screw the civ colors big time; in less than a second, the egyptians, my hatred enemies, had become red (wow, have their forces surrendered to mine? - I am the Romans - I never saw this feature on the manual), and then blue (what? the germans now have war chariots?) and finally green (hmmm, why is Alexander attacking New Pompeii if we are in peace? How come I did not know about it?) before returning to their glorious yellow.

I managed to fix this problem tweaking hardware acceleration on system properties, but the game has turned even slower than before.

So my questions: are the 12.xx drivers more stable? Did anyone here experienced this color problem before? Or do I have to install the (old, old, old) original driver? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Sorry if this is a long post to tell you a short story, but I was so frustrated that I decided to post something lighter than the usual whining (this #@$%¨&** game is *&¨%$%$#!!! My system is a *&¨%$#@#!!! The world is not fair! God does not exist!! - well, this last one is not properly whining... )

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

bump...

It's so sad when you post three times on a topic you created...

Anyway, I managed to fix the colour problem. I installed the 21.81 detonator driver non-WHQL certified, as was recommended on Nvidia web site. BUT slowness is still active...

I dare to ask it again : are the 12.41 drivers more stable? I downloaded them too, but I have not installed them yet (I am avoiding to change things much, because my computer is some sort of old Frankenstein and I am afraid it might not stand so many alterations...).

Please, someone...? You know, the 12.41 drivers... are they more stable than the newest drivers? Someone...? Pleeease...

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

it's an old problem: Riva TNT and TNT2 Cards can be slower with the newest detonator drivers, because they are made particuarly for GeForce3 Chipsets.
This problem can also be experienced in Counter-Strike, Graphic errors and slow-motion are the result.

I would recommend either Detonator Version 650 or 522, if you have a TNT1: Buy a new card

Andy: thanks for your kind answer!

Yeah, I know... my card is reaaaaly old. But, considering the kind of games I play, it´s not much of a problem - I´ve been playing mainly strategy games or related (Civ3, SMAC, RollerCoaster Tycoon...) and sports games (FIFA 2002, GP3).

I tested the 21.81 driver playing FIFA 2002 and, man, it was ugly. (And it was running pretty well with the older driver). As for GP3, it used to run flawlessly even with older drivers, but that is because the game does not makes fully use of your 3D accelerator anyway.

I will accept your advice and return to more stable drivers... because I don´t feel the urge to buy a new videocard. If I was a Quake player... probably, but then I would not be playing Civ games

I´m relieved now. Feel free to post or not.
