I'd get upset that a kid said he quite liked hotdogs? You what?

Oh no, wait, I remember now, you're just a ****er.

I appreciate your ability to understand sentences under heavy pessure and control youself when replying to them.

Wiglaf, if the worst you have to worry about is hearing naughty words and how the term 'hot dog' can have phallic connotations, you must have a very sheltered and cushy life indeed. I see far worse troubles in the world, and quite frankly, your middle class twitterings are vomitworthy.

It'll bring down society and technology within 100 years. Not to mention the hotdog industry.

Here, let me give you the dictionary definition

What dictionary? Date published? Any origin listed or hinted?

In 1970, if you said you'd like to go to a gay orgy with some fags, you'd get the same reaction as you'd get today. Even in 1950 (except for the "gay" part).

Commandos, spies, and widespread communication devices have been around LONG before 1970 anyway. Hell, the whole trend could've started in the 1800's. Still, unless you can prove this sort of sexual slang began to take common household status around a time when communism and/or castro were completely free of the earth, I'll maintain my solid position that this wasn't just a harmless evolution of a language. Might have been well water poisoning during the chaos of the Middle Ages, who knows.

In any event, I'm THIS close to blowing the whole thing wide open and you're all slowing my thought process.

With all due respect, dear heart, that would be impossible. The most we could hope for is to push it into "reverse".

The English language is founded on, and thrives on, ambiguity. That's what makes it so much fun. It constantly creates new openings for you to insert your tool of choice into.

So with the use of words and other subtle means communism has been trying to destroy the social fabric of the American way of attacking free choice and freedom for all. The side effects of this is the indignant response and intolerance through the use of words. They create a derogatory label from the most common of words in some cases completely changing the words meaning gay as an example. If it does not have one now they will create it by using everyday words like hotdog to express a new meaning intended of insult and harm. This then creates a fractured society based on hate and discrimination and intolerance for sectors of society. Thus ripping at the basic fabric of society fracturing it into groups that oppose one and other using words as a weapon.///?

Unlikely. Language is fluid, it changes constantly-even today when we have dictionaries and a fixed grammar. Language is spoken by people, not books, so it changes, evolves, and eventually, becomes something so incredibly different from the original so as to be unrecognizeable to later speakers. This is why we need to translate Beowoulf, and not Shakespeare, despite them both being written on the same island. Even modern English is different from 16th Century English-witness the upgrading of the King James bible.

Even in the US, where English has only been spoken for four hundred years, it would be difficult for our ancestors to understand our speech completely.

The evolution of the word 'gay' from meaning 'happy' to meaning 'homosexual' is not worrisome, and will not bring about the end of civilization as we know it.

DanQ? Is that you?

In any event, the hotdog industry will eventually shutdown if this continues over a long period of time (maybe 50-70 years). Although now it's fine and people are mature enough to handle it, eventually this sort of slang will make it 'uncool' to eat a Lucky Dog or something, and to society that isn't helpful. To the industry, it's deadly. Just look at catfish.

Then again, hotdogs are usually sold by criminals out of prision hoping to make a quick buck while on the run. Maybe it wouldn't be that big a loss to eliminate a major and common front among outlaws, but the impact on honest and good vendors would be far too great to be acceptable even for the obvious benefits. Or would it...

Not so simple, is it Marc?

A few laughs can be sacrificed for the purity of a language, I would think.

Either way, Shake would've been better off starting his own cult and leaving the rest of the world sane and mindful of healthy tradition.

Purity of the English langauge is fine. Its American thats the bastardised bastard child of Shakespeare's mother tongue.
(btw, he invented about 3000 new words, so in effect he did invent a new level of English. Many of those words are still used today)

Ah yes. The "purity" of the English language. Which is, of course, the biggest mongrel of them all- effortlessly absorbing the sexy bits of other languages all the time, and throughout history.

If you want a pure language, sample Welsh. It has no word for many modern concepts. Or "my round".

Put an end to popups!

International Communist Conspiracy (3/3, Fanatic, Communist) is not big enough menace to bring about the change in language. No, this is the work of true masterminding menace, Comrade Billy Klintoon (4/2, Straight, Government, Liberal) and his Arkansas Mafia (6/7, Criminal) - they've been murdering hundreds of these words to bring around their own twisted meanings, just as this book I'm just about to publish will show, along with facts that Klintoon daily kicks small puppies and DRINKS THEIR BLOOD! They call me crazy nyahahaa but I'll show them yet who'se crazy nyahahahaa cuz it'll be too late for them when Hitlery Klintoon (2/4, Liberal) comes to rape their daughters nyahahaa
