What do I prefer? I prefer polls that don't pry into people's personal business, and imply judgement on the basis of one's sexual orientation. We're all people, why is this so hard to grasp.

No Snapper, I just don't think it's appropriate. I can make up my mind about people without their sexuality entering into it. I think you should work on that too. And please don't throw your insinuations around like that. I'd like to retain at least some illusion you're not a total jackass.

Connor, you shoulda broken it down by gender, male, female, banana, and each one's sexual orientation.

Interestingly, of our self-selected poll, almost a quarter are "gay" (using broadly defined Kinsey terms).

Winston.

While I can understand that your sexual preference isn't something you usually yell of the roofs (mine is bi-curious by the way, wich I think everyone can be should they really put effort in it, though one person more then the other) (theoretically, I could learn to eat chicory) I don't see where there is a judgement of value in here.

And since people think about sex a lot, a little 'research' regarding what apolytoners like/could like about might be in order. Hey, it's less boring then 'boxers or briefs' methinks.

Rand,

It's judgemental alright in as much as there are a thousands way of being a fellow human within each of those four options in the poll. Over simplified, biased generalization is what this is.

And thus inappropriate.

People's sexual orientation says nothing about who they are. Only their individual values, opinions and conduct do.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Over simplified? Well of course. Bisexual, can for example mean everything from straight with some side-experiments to gay with side-expirements. It's hard to say 'I like women a bit more then Snapcase' or 'I'm a bit less open to the idea of homosexuality then Rand' But that's the way humanity thinks. With categories. In every science everyone inmediately looks for a point where they can say 'That's where it changes'. Almost all human judgements are simplified. It's a way to see structure in the world. I agree that the straight and gay categories (the only absolutes) are probably simplified. There is not completely white except in theory and there is no completely gay/straight except in theory. but to say such generalizations, if done without a moral judgement are evil? No, don't think I can agree with that.

And is it judgemental? I don't see where there is a 'this is good and this is bad' on this. it's simply a question what you prefer, wich says indeed nothing about how good a person you are.

I don't think the point of this poll was to say anything about our personalities, but rather just about which gender we prefer. I don't see any judgment there, since most of the people I know have defined their sexuality one way or the other, without judging themselves in any way. It is only inappropriate to ask if you don't wish to answer questions about your sexuality... and should you not want to discuss the subject, you could steer clear of the threads discussing it.

As for me, I'm gay, although I wonder why the bi-curious option only has the explanation "being open to the possibility of trying same-sex, but know that you like opposite sex". Nowhere could I see an option of "being open to the possibility of trying the opposite sex but knowing you like same sex".

Maybe because most homosexuals probably have tried straight sex but can't (because of pressure) But it is indeed a mistake. So is 'gay' I thought that referred to male homosexuals only. then again, not many females here on apolyton.

I think 'gay' is sometimes used for females as well; using it for both genders suit me fine and I think is understandable, although any female homosexuals here might disagree... so gay/lesbian might have been better.

As for gays trying straight sex, I have no idea whether most really have done that... of course, we could set up another poll asking gay people whether they have done that, although I don't think we would get enough answers from Apolytoners to do any statistical analysis

Oh, the pigeonholed, discrete method of defining sexuality is so primitive and outmoded anyway. I doubt there is really any such thing as a 'straight' person and a 'gay' person 100%. My penchant appears to be female but I also have a 'don't knock it 'til you've tried it' attitude to the whole thing, although it just doesn't seem to be the thing I want to do at the moment (homosexual interaction, that is).

So I will have to put myself down as trisexual: I try, but I don't get any

Oh right, we're narrow-minded because you came into a poll of which you didn't approve and complained about it. All I did was point out that you are perfectly free not to participate (it's completely voluntary) and that you don't even have to read it.

It's not intrusive in the least, and since you have to willingly opened the thread, you are made it your own business. You don't want to tell people about yourself, you don't have to. You don't want to know about others, don't look.

So all I'm saying is, you have no right to complain.

I wonder what stereotypes of ours you are talking about? I agree with you and PH in that there are certainly no 100% gay or straight people and that people should like whatever they feel comfortable with. Of course, in an ideal society, sexual preferences should have no significance whatsoever, so you wouldn't have to define yourself in any way particular. As things are in our society today, identifying yourself as gay, however, is often an important step in accepting your sexuality, should you not feel it fits the heterosexual norm still often prevalent well enough. I am glad to see, though, that more and more often young people are starting to question the need for limiting stereotypes as regards your gender and sexual behaviour.

Keeping that in mind, however, I wouldn't refuse to say that I tend to prefer guys to girls, if someone should wish to know that, and the simplest way of saying that is calling myself "gay". What's the point of refusing to answer the question? I would, however, wish to hear your alternative take on the subject, if you are able to explain it without calling us narrowminded once again.

Even though there is a good deal of trouth in winston's ranting, it is actually inapropriate here and under the given circumstances.
This is an Apolyton poll, another ticklish excercise to make some decent fun, without really trying to "define" what whoever on this board is all about - actually I have seen a number of this type of threads around here and none of them sounded "insulting" - just a bit trolling maybe

So, winston, relax buddy, nobody wants to know wether you like men, women, sheep, goats (you forgot the goat option, silly!!!! Where shall the goat lovers put their vote for? Goats ain't women or men, they are ...goats?!) berry bushes or whatever.

Enjoy life, enjoy sex, enjoy civ3 - you mind us talking about the rest of the things we enjoy?
