I haven't plaued SMAX much but I noticed that concentrating in one of the four areas of research doesn't help as much as it used to. For instance, I'm doing the blind research and there's a tech I really want and I have all the prereqs - I set my priority to that tech's class but I keep getting all sorts of other techs from other classes. It seems like something changed between SMAC and SMAX.

I bumped a thread where people talked about this-- there are probably a lot more. I find that, using the search function, you can find all sorts of good stuff.
