Full PM-box? Change here!

I'm looking to experiment with the creation of a new era and since using art programs is not something I can do well enough for this, I appeal to the artists of the world to make a pic for when this era is entered.

Maybe some CN Tower style buildings, lights visible under the surface of the river, domed buildings, a couple of flying cars flying around the city skyline and the like.

I've been wanting to do that myself, so I will do it now, see how well I do

if it doesn't look good, then I'll wait till I've got to grips with lightwave and do it in 3D

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

you'll probably notice a few of the buildings from other places =o)

well I had to, I came to the realization that I would be doing like 20 buildings in order to cover the modern era. it's not easy.. especially if you're doing it by hand.

I'll tell you what is mine tho, and thats the water front with blue light, the church, the tall black one, the globe thing, the dome thing next to it, the many condos next to that on the other island.. the pyramid and the road that floats

btw, its not finished and the image size is wrong, so I wouldn't use it yet if you're wanting to

Dunno exactly just yet. It's still very much in the theory stage, a few scrawlings here, a few scunched up bits of paper there. You know how it is.
I plan to add a couple of government types (a couple in the future and some in the others), check out some of the stuff in CTP2 for inspiration as far as techs/units/wonders go. Also I plan to add a new citizen type (to add to entertainer, etc.) as soon as I figure out how that can be done and more (futurish) natural
resources.

On the whole, it has to be worth the players time spending on research as opposed to saving thier cash for Nukes and Modern Armors

A few problems I forsee are:

1.) The game ends in 2050 so that limits firstly what techs can go in and secondly how long the future? era will be.

2.) Making it stay in keeping with the rest of the game will be extremly difficult taking into account the leaderhead files, all the unit files, city (cityview and map) images, the civ advance pics, etc...

3a.) The non-violent victories (U.N., Space Race, etc..) will have to be moved foward, for extended play, meaning they will have to be replaced by stuff. I was thinking some sort of Pacifistic thingy instead of the spaceship.

3b.)But that means a whole new in-game video - out of my league and almost definately a breach of copyright

4.) It just plain not working.

5.) Infogrames.

6.) Lack of long terrm interest.

7.) Playtesting. Since a whole game will have to be played and more before it can be seen, it may take an awful long time to identify, let alone work out the bugs

MY Major problem is not being able to draw... a biggie I know but I figure if I make the era's framework, Techs, Units, Wonders and stuff.
I can hand it on to artists and animators to finish (or not if it turns out to be crap ).

If anyone has any suggestions as to what should go in or if anyone thinks they can do it better (seriously), then this is the place to voice them I guess. Phew, almost wish I hadn't started this thread

The main reason I wanted the splash pic was to see what happens when an additional era is entered - I know you can do this without the pic but it would have so much more of a sense of occasion
And hey, it looks really cool I say again sn00py, wicked!!

Enter the AD-FREE zone

i really really think that firaxis should have made a civ3 with many and more of the futuristic ideas of ctp2... more governments.. i think they kept us wanting more, it is sad to end the game in almost the same conditions of the actual world... no sci-fi, or future age

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

the way I see it, having loads of flying cars with no direct passages, would cause chaos, I think flying cars would be a smoother ride and the road below would probably be the thing you land on when you want to stop aswell as passage?

I'd love to have a real go at the Era Splash
the one I did above was just for fun

if Firaxis releases a good editor, one with things that allow us to manipulate almost anything, then I am all for doing as much artwork as needed.

damn its hot right now

about that Cinema 4D, you won't believe what happened... I talked to my uncle about needing help with lightwave,
and I get home today and see that he has left 2 VTC (teaching CDs) for Cinema 4D. so talk about co-incidence

You are truly the King, Sn00py!

I haven't yet played through the entire tech tree, so I don't know if there's a flourish at the end, but a graphic like this would be very appropriate at that point. Future techs could still continue afterwards.

Can this be done, or is this what you are talking about, Grommit?

OK Courtesy of sn00py, here is the pic.

I think in order to see it, you have to change the lines at the bottom of the 'pediaicons' file to read:

'#ERA_SPLASH_ERA_3
art\erasplash\modern.pcx
art\erasplash\future.pcx'

Instead of:

'#ERA_SPLASH_ERA_3
art\erasplash\modern.pcx
art\erasplash\modern.pcx'

But don't quote me on that.

What I am hoping to do - eventually is:

Create an ADDITIONAL era.
This will mean creating at least (if the Modern era is used as a frame of reference):-

- 17 entirely new techs. (fusion power?)
- 11 new units.
- 8 city improvements.
- 5 Great and 2 small wonders
- Some new resources. - New city icons for the map.

I have to admit, that picture wasn't so good, I drew another one today:

As you can see, it matches in with the others relativly well. Every era shows buildings develop and adds a new type of structure, (eg. industrial age factories) you may have also noticed that each era has exactly the same sky and river. In my future one, I have still kept the sky and river in the same format, I have changed the building structure and added a dome to the top of some buildings.

Please feel free to use it.
