Dang, wished I had watched for you guys on Superbowl Sunday, I coulda joined in. But I did watch the game.

Tom Brady's grandpa used to be my barber when I was a boy. I think I met him once when he visited his grandma at the local smalltown nursing home. Young Brady spent summers at his grandparent's dairy farm near my little dear old hometown.

I don't play Civ 3, (for many reasons) but am still playing MP quite a bit.

I'm at GMT-5 and available weeknights, or weekends.

I am sick and tired of ICQing folks who don't play anymore, and getting the reply "I only play Civ 3 now". My contact list has diminished greatly since the scourge that is Civ 3 was released.

I don't mind playing the runt, or the "has been". My previous history as an "Avalon Hill"er prevents me from being a lousy sport


I would be mightily interested in a game, and look forward to your reply.

All right, so here goes --

New kid on the block, considering MP. Very little playing experience, though I've watched bits and pieces a bunch of times. Finally bought the game. I'm a gamer, but have never done ANY online MP of any type. (A whole new world...)

Would like to join the group in my all-too-rare spare time (maybe Saturday nights?), but have several questions for the group before I know if that's appropriate.

1. I own Civ2 MP Gold for Mac (gasp). Is that problematic with this group?
2. My at-home connection is via AOL on a 56k modem. Is THAT problematic?
3. I totally don't get the ICQ thing. RAH sez it's the communication messaging for MP, but I don't know...
-- *what it is* (software? a comm protocol? a Web portal?)
-- *if it's Mac-friendly*
-- *where I can get it* (...and the associate ICQ address)
-- *its cost* (an actual product? shareware?)
-- *if I can play without it*

1. afaik, civ2 for mac shouldn't be a problem as long as you're properly patched
2. only in that AOL sucks , as i also have 56k modem
3. icq is a free communication software, commonly used by MPers. i don't know if it works on macs though. if it doesn't there are other things to use, such as AIM.
hopefully this link will be useful (my knowledge of macs is limited to that they exist and some people use them)

gentle? i'm the only gentle one around here, mostly because i'm skill-impaired

the group usually plays friday and saturday nights, with occasional other times, i think a couple of weird guys play on tuesdays

finally a small warning, beware the ferrets

Thanks for the reponses, guys. Very helpful (I think).

I've downloaded ICQ and will install after finishing this post. Then, will install most recent Mac patch from Apolyton site. Then, presumably, I'll be set to join in the Civving.

...and worry not -- I've been in "Beware" mode with Ming and rah since the mid-seventies. In fact, I was there on the day Ming uttered those infamous words, "Defend yourself, *****!" (Lord knows how THAT ended in marriage...)

Wish me luck on my installs. Hope to be back soon.

Perhaps a nice rah story next time around...

Thanks for the wecome, War4ever. I have great confidence that I'll be the lightweight for some time to come. Reminiscent of taking up golf 20 years or so after some of my friends -- expecting to be painfully non-competitive for some time to come.

But it appears you like that in a player...
