About the ocean: I used a line of ocean squares on the edge of the map to prevent people from walking from morocco to arabia or building a harbour in russia to sail to england. To make this possible I removed the ability from *all* ships to cross oceans (didn't test that yet though, also aeroplanes probably will be able to cross the ocean anyway (from a russian airbase to a carrier waiting in the atlantic or something).
I will touch up the ocean part of the atlantic though.
There really aren't many islands in this part of the atlantic; between Iceland and Scotland there are the Shetland islands and the Faeroer. In the Mediterranean there are also very few islands besides the Balears, Corsica and Sardinia, Sicily, Elba, Crete, Cyprus and the smaller greek islands. Ah..for 1.2 I'll add Stromboli. In the arctic ocean there are some islands but most of them are too far north to be included on this map (great mineral resources..but no..can't be bothered to lower the map..and lose northern africa in the process.
Now if an army of perfectionists could start complaining about ill-placed resources I'd really be happy.
Oh yea, before I forget about it I'll thank Harlan for Civ3 Scenario Haven and LookANinja for BMPtoBIC.

How about making 2 long rows or mountains all the way down through the map and seperate them by 10 rows of ocean squares? No cities can be built on the mountains, so no ports can be made to launch ships into this "dividing ocean" and the distance will be too long for planes to cross even from closely based carriers.
Not a very elegant solution, but it might work.

...or with some tools like in civ2 add a row of barbarian units with defence 99 and barbarian cities with sdi defences inside them...

Strange thing with this map...
For some reason, I learn all technologies in 4 turns. Is this because the size is wacky? My game doesn't do this with any other maps. Something I'm doing wrong? It's not very fun this way...

Hmm..a strange problem indeed.
I have been playing a game on the map myself (with dutch civ) until about 0 A.D. I didn't encounter that 4 turn/tech problem, although there seemed to be some problems concerning the tech tree. I'm quite sure that the *size* isn't the problem, if that would be the case then this problem would have been reported many times already.
Has anybody else encountered the same problem.
Buglist:
All of these appear to be erratic problems..weird
- 4 turn/tech problem
- game crashes when sharing maps (human player: dutch, comp: egyptian)
- tech tree (F6) doesn't work as it should

I'll try to find out that technologyproblem..maybe it has to do with the tech rate modifier.
Hmm...the 512 cities..maybe wait for firaxis to release a patch to allow 1024 cities (whoa..that's a LOT!)........or try making a smaller map..which wouldn't be a bad idea as quite many mappers are primarily toying with the ubersizes.
Yummy..ww2 scenario..for something like that the max_cities reached problem could be solved by disallowing settlers to be built.
/Norman, still waiting for the nit-pickers to come up with some geographical errors..it isn't easy to be good =]

Nice map Norm, but I also encountered the 4 tech problem as another poster comented.
Kind of takes the challenge out of the game a bit......not sure why some and not others are getting this.
Good luck

Hmm....the four tech bug......this really seems odd. Which civilization did you play when you encountered this problem? On the other hand, if we can find out what causes this, the bug could be exploited for some scenarios or so.

Hi
Great map. However when trading territory map with the egyption caused the game to crash, I can trade map with everyone else?
Would love to see a WWI or WWII scenario on this map, ever considered doing such a huge map for the entire world or other regions, pacific, africa or North America?
A suggestion: More pine forests in Scandinavia instead of ordinary forest. Should Iceland be more south? I believe all of Iceland is below the polar circle?
More Uranium in Sweden, I believe Sweden has 1/6 of all Uranium resources in the world

btw, I too had a new tech in 4 turns, so I added a world size, named it Giga and had the tech rate to 400.

Hi,
what mark did you have in history ?
Hungarian instead of Austrian ? The Austrian Monarchy of Habsburg dominated the History of Europe about 100 years. Even had ties to Mexico and Napoleon Boneparte (his wife was from Austria) and so on ... so of course it was the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, but only an Austrian Ruler. Okay this Monarchy had his biggest influences because of Marriage and not war, but who cares... so make love not war :-) because when Austrian started to do war their reign was finished ... WWI and with German in WWII ... but Hungarian what offense to compare, even nice people, but never had any political influence.
Maybe you should read History books before doing such decisions ... and bye the way it was an Austrian Army who won the first time in History against the famouse Napoleon Bonarparte ... but Hungarians ?

I was playing the English when I had the 4 tech/turn problem.
BTW, any way you could make a smaller version (like just Huge size) as well? It's just a massive undertaking.

Marla,
Thanks for the comment...Attention future scenario builders: this is the map you're looking for! ;-]
Risbinroch,
Thank you for the solution, I'll implement that into the next version of the map. One sixth of all uranium in the world..I doubt that. If you can give me some references to that statement, I'll change that in the next version. One reason of not including too much uranium is to prevent the appearance of very many nuclear powers on the map. Historically, there are 4 nuclear powers on this map. Maybe a few extra uraniums will be possible though.
I'll see what looks better aesthetically on the issue of forests in Scandinavia. I find the standard pine forest to be a bit too arcticish in appearance, so a few tiles here and there, more in the northern areas, ok, but in the more southern regions there are also some non-pine forests, and the forests there tend to be more dense, for which the normal forest looks better imho.
Iceland should be placed correctly on this map, I used this program to import a map of Europe into the editor (what was it called again). According to the projection of that map all land masses should be placed more or less correctly.
I'll think about the idea of producing more maps of this type.. Anybody interested in a colonization type of game, if the scenario editor allows lots of customization.....?
Frugal,
That might very well be my next project, wait and see (No promises though ;-] )
Alex,
On my exams at school I had a 9,5...now I've had a few months european history at university level for which I passed. The main problem is that there just is a bit of a gap in that region of the map. Possible contestants for that bit are Austria, Romania and, yes, Hungary. Austria is geographically probably too close to Germany, Poland and maybe also Rome. Hungary is slightly further to the south-east, which allows more space for the western-central european civilizations for expansion. It's a gameplay issue. And if you want to play Austria-Hungary, then it's still an ok choice, except for the city names.
