If sqrt(11) was a rational number it could be written as P/Q with P&Q integer values wich can't be simplified anymore(ie: 5 and 21 ok,but 15 and 21 not since both still can be devided by 3).

So we have
sqrt(11)=P/Q
<=>11=P²/Q²
this means that P² can be devided by Q² so P² can be devided by Q.What means that P and Q have a at least a common factor BUT we stated that this isn't so=> sqrt(11) is no rational number.

easy
(this thing drove the Pythagorean school almost mad)

You forgot to prove that Sqrt(11) is not an integer. Easy enough, but it's a necessary step (otherwise you've also proven that sqrt(n) is irrational for all n natural numbers)

this is for a comp algorithm i'm trying to write....

1) find the general term for the sum of the first n numbers of the series

2) find the sum n --> infinity

1 - 1/9 + 1/45 - 1/189 ... + [(-1)^(n-1)]/(3^n-1)(2n - 1)

[edit: put something really stupid here,but problems solved now ]

Why sqrt(11) isn't an integer=> based on intuition

9<11<16
take sqrt
3 since we know there are no integers between 3 and 4 sqrt(11) isn't an integer ergo Q >1(had to put that too in the previous post)

(btw this one(sqrt(11) is rather ambigious to prove sqrt(2) is clearer)

strange...I'm glad I get my math in Dutch(although this sometimes gives problems for translations).

Still noone who found a way to create 24 by only using 1,3,4,6 and (,+,-,x,:,)

It really isn't that hard.(just think what multiplication will give you 24 and think how you can write it)

Since it's for a computer program just use the recursive one and for nr2 never mind infinity that's something a computer can't handle==> let the loop go until
[(-1)^(n-1)]/(3^n-1)(2n - 1)]<10^x (and choose your x according to the accuracy)
(or you could try something goniometric)

well the whole purpose is that i won't have to loop with a general formula....

the obvious answer is 4 x 6 x 1^3 but i don't think i can use exponents....

Well it is 24

And you are right here to so I'm sorry this isn't the right answer.
(but you are getting very close,think of other ways to write 4x6)

6/(1-3/4)=24

Don't say that it is so hard c'mon.(no need for differential equations,no need for transformation to Besselfunctions,just plain simple baby math.)

Now I get the impression you are looking for an excuse,to me it looks clear that you are only allowed to use the basic math-operations.(else you could start using powers,Faculties,...)

So Chowlett, any chance of the answers to the questions. I am particularly puzzled by the 3.1415... question. Sure its the beginnings of pi, but what does LN mean?
