The situation - I have a Great Leader sitting in my capital, and I'm kind of tempted to build an army. The question is this - do I do it now, or wait a bit until I've researched enough to produce some better military units?
This becomes a moot point, of course, if I can upgrade armies in the same fashion as other units - so that's the question, can I?

In addition to the benefits that Todd Hawks mentioned, remember that both the units in an army and the army itself, can still gain experience. Also, upon completing the Pentagon you can add an additional unit to each of your existing armies, of any type.
