This is an updated version of Zach Wilson's 100x100 standard world map which came with the game. Although it retains the orientation of the original, all continents have been completely reworked. At this low resolution lod, grid-by-grid analyses just turn into a huge mess, so instead I had to judge most coastlines and land elevations by eye using numerous sources of data.
Update v4.0:
Significant changes to the map which are too many to list here in detail. In general: updated coastline to India and Far East, levels of forestation changed worldwide to reflect a pre-civilisation distribution, more space for cities in N America, and player-start/barbarian camp/goodie hut locations updated with playability in mind.
Update v4.6:
Readjustments at continent level, especially E Asia, NE Russia, Australia. The end result is that the minimap now resembles the actual Earth much more than before, while recognisability at game level has been preserved.
V5.1
Again changes all round the map. Most notably the levels of forestation and tundra in Russia, and the addition of many more rivers worldwide as these tend to make the game more interesting. 16 civs fight over limited terrain in one standard sized map, which I've found make for some absolutely hectic but brilliant games. Diplomacy and trade are therefore crucial to survival. The starting positions are not "correct" but balanced for gameplay. However, you're free to change them and post the modifications elsewhere.

This version is far from definitive, so I am currently taking time (out of my medical studies mind you ) to come up with regular updates of this map. Please post any suggestions here.
Current objectives list:
1. Correct non-jungle terrain in S America
2. Rework player starting locations, goody huts and barbarian camps to allow for more balanced games.

Looks good, I'm glad we finally have a decent standard sized real earth map. Do you know how many of each resource is on it?

The resources were distributed according to Satya's world map version 4, with strategic resources limited to around 7-8 per map. Other types of resources are distributed mainly with geographical accuracy in mind.
Restriction on particular resources eg uranium and petroleum has made for some interesting and dramatic shifts in global balance of power in the 3 games I've played so far on version 4 (yeah yeah, you might laugh, but I don't have as much free time on my hands as you might think)
As far as I understand the game to work, diminishable strategic resources seem to reappear in another area of the world once it disappears in a predefined location, so there is no risk of the world "running out" of these precious commodities.

I've had version 5 lurking around my hard disk for a while now. I'll get round to posting it if I've got enough time and demand for it. Again a dramatic change all round so I suppose I'll have to look into your suggestions with a bit more thought.

Thanks, but surgery probably isn't my type of thing. I'll most likely end up being a neurologist.
