That's a pretty broad question to answer. Variables include such things as the difficulty level you are on (how big can your cities get before they are unhappy), what nation you play (Persia's special unit is used totally differently than the Roman), map, etc. Check out the strategy threads. Also, experiment with population rushing. It's a good strat early game.
