I would like everyone to be rated in all games that are in PBEM rankings table.. I propose that no one will lose points for coming last (at present they can lose quite a lot for coming last) but they will only gain a very small amount.... It is designed to encorage everyone to be rated- Imagine in an eight player game the last 4 players choose not to be rated- under the present system the 4th placed player (the last of the rated players in an 8 player game) will lose points.... EVEN THOUGH he is coming 4th out of 8 - it seems crazy and unfair- the mechanics are in an early post..

Blackice you are right..... It should just be done, there is really nothing to debate, and no one loses out- In the main it is only moderators that follow this thread, so I must rely on them to explain it in their respective games.... How anyone could object I cannot see..

Well, I guess my problem is that I never understood the mechanics of Quinn's system, so I don't know how Gav's proposal changes it.

Dugrik - that was the problem I had with Steves system..... I never understood it, which was nothing to do with Quinns, I just seemed to get a mental block with it!

The System implememented now is all rated players 'stake' 10% of their score, so if you have a score of 20.000 , you stake 2.000 points... all these 10%s are added together and the stake is removed from the score (like a bet) so you have 18.000 points left after the 'bet' ..... All the stakes from all the rated players are added together, and then awarded according to position in the game.... so in a 5 player game there may be 9.5 points staked altogether, the first player may get 35% of the pot, the second player 22% etc etc..... What I a now suggesting is that we do exactly the same as we do now , apart from your score does not have your 10% deducted before the calculation is performed .

If I understand this correctly...

You play PBEM, you get points. How many points is determined by the total points of all players in that game (10% of the total to be awarded) and where you rank in the ratings. Sounds pretty good to me.

The only way to lose points is to beat Gav, which naturally would have a massive penalty.

Bytheway John is a new player who at one point did not want to be rated bytheway

Now speaking of being a newbie should newbies all of em just start at 20 or 18 regardless of beating the invincable ai? I mean ai is a challenge really why not just say ok you want to be rated here you go?

Sorry about not mentioning which players were unrated, but I can never remember that. I always used Quinn's list in his first post of the thread to find that out, but I noticed that you didn't put that list in your post.

HOW THE RATINGS WORK

I hold a database of all players, against each player is a series of entries, name, score, wins, losses then there are two further columns, stake and remainder.... The stake is 10% of the Current Score, the remainder is the current score less the stake of 10% (or 90%) all stakes are added together for all rated players in the game then a percentage of this is added to the scores according to the position they finish in - for instance with 5 rated players the first player gets 41% of the total, second, 27%, third, 17% 4th, 10% and 5th 5%...


SO in a 5 player result, if all stakes are added together, and the total comes to 10.000 and all players had 20.000 points the results would be as follows..

Player one starts on 20.00 and stakes 2 points (10%) he is left with 18 points.... but wins 41% of the pot (of 10.00 points) so he ends up with 18.00 plus 4.1 or 22.1 points

Player 2 ends up with 18 plus 2.7 or 20.7

Player 3 ends up with 18 plus 1.7 or 19.7

Player 4 ends up with 18 plus 1.0 or 19.0

Player 5 ends up with 18 plus 0.5 or 18.5

As you can see the lower your score goes the less you stake... and the higher your score goes the more you stake.
