Just a technical point of interest comment here.... For those that do not see how the audio could have been translated due to poor or almost inaudible sound, you would be amazed by the sophistication of some of the audio systems used to reproduce or decipher sound.

Technology is amazing these days. I trust the translation to be correct.

I also do not think the US Gov't released this tape to be seen as the end all evidence. It is clear , we are following our agenda, even before this tape was come upon.

It is more likely released to try to keep the emotion flowing in their favor. Seems a relatively usefull tactic if one was to continue down this path. And it is clear that the US is going to continue this route.

My personal opinion..... I didn't need the tape to form a judgement. I had already formed one based mainly on the media information of the UK and US. And I do not believe that the total of all media from these two countries are lying or in some sort of fantastic conspiracy.

Without questioning the validity of the tapes per se, does anybody know any more about how it was found? "It was found in an abandoned house in Jalalabad" just seems beyond belief; you're conducting house-to-house searches in a place as big as Jalalabad, and you happen to grab this one videotape? I mean, did they know whose house it was? Did they just grab all videos they found, and sort them out later? ("Anything yet, Jim?" "No, but here's another Pamela/Tommy Lee for the pile.") Did it magically glisten like an object you're supposed to add to your inventory in a badly designed adventure game? Anybody have a sense of this?

There seems to be some confusion regarding the words Evidence and Proof in a legal context. For all of you for whom English is not your first language (and Osweld):

Evidence refers to something put before a court in order to establish proof of a case. There are rules as to what sorts of things can be put before a court. Statements made by a defendent are not only legal evidence in the vast majority of cases, they are considered strong evidence, especially when the statement was made without any obvious coercion.

For Proof lets take a look at what the Merriam Webster Dictionary says:

"the cogency of evidence that compels acceptance by the mind of a truth or a fact "

In a legal sense proof (either a proponderance of evidence in a civil matter or beyond a reasonable doubt in a criminal matter) is required for the party bringing the suit or charge can prevail at a trial.

Thus the video tape is indeed evidence which defense lawyers could try to supress if they can prove it was phony, and would almost certainly try to cast doubt upon if it was presented at trial. For some it would constitute proof alone, but I don't doubt that if OBL is ever brought to trial there will be much more to bolster it.

if not, then i guess that if i take a camera and make a video of paiktis taking credit for the attack and describing joyfully how he heard about it on the news, the US will bomb athens tomorrow morning

Just from the part I heard about :
1. OBL says he knew the exact day the attack would take place five days ahead of time.
2. OBL says that some of terrorists did not know the nature of trhe mission until just before they boarded the planes.

Why did the hijackers leave behind evidence in a car? Because people make mistakes. Read any "Stupid Crooks" item for example.

Why did OBL allow such a tape to be made? Because he felt relatively secure, and thought it was for the personal use of the interviewer.

For those who doubt OBL's involvement, can you cite any shread of evidence, however dubious, to support any alternative hypothesis? I recognize that most, if not all, the effort has been directed at OBL, but surely there must be some scrap of evidence or half credible theory to support your position. Otherwise I dont see why your arguments should be taken seriously.

Well Mark, the "x is know to be a terrorist" part is really unnecessary. When someone says they did something, most judges/juries have a tendency to believe them and find them guilty. Does it work differently in your country?

A lot of people that claim they did something and didn't really do it sometimes suffer the consequenses. Go Figure.

What I consider more important is that this is just the icing on the cake. We must have other proof, (the stuff that the government was showing other governments but wouldn't release due to possibly compromising our sources.) This tape didn't compromise anybody, so the other items must be different. If other governments believed us before seeing this tape.........this is just icing on the cake.

Where they went into Jalalabad they saw a house with a big neon sign saying, "bin Ladin slept here." When they entered the house they saw a tape titled My Confession-UBL.

It was just that simple.
