Should moderators change thread titles so that they are more informative? (Time out:0 days after 04-01-2002, 23:17)
Yes, it will save us all some time
No, it is a violation of our freedom of expression

Rant about stupid uninformative thread titles Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

This is a bit of a rant of something I've found rather annoying in forums in general, that is, the total lack of information that some people put in their thread titles. I don't know about you, but response time can be slow enough as it is without having to specifically click on threads to find out what they're about. We should be able to do a quick glance at a list of threads and be able to surmise what each one is about, and whether we would be interested in pursuing it further or not. Some examples of what I mean by bad thread titles is below:

"I found a bug"
Fine, you found a bug. But why couldn't you summarise what the bug was in the title. It might be a well-known bug reported by 100 others already or apreviously unknown one but wouldn't it be better to say something like "Bug with scene advisor screen - system crashed" or somesuch, anything to be more informative.

"I've got a new idea"
Oh, neato. And now I have to spend several seconds clicking on a thread and waiting to see what it is. Why not "New idea with creating armies" - at least that would be a little more informative and I can bypass it if I'm not interested.

"Quick question"
Well, if its a quick question you could've probably fitted it into the title. I could then see at a glance whether I can answer it or not.

Anyway, to summarise, the point I'm making is that thread titles should be as informative as possible. It's a pain in the butt to have to click on so many thread just to see what they're about. I don't know if the reason why some people do this is attention getting or maybe they're just not thinking. But it takes some of the fun away from the forums and can cause some frustration.

Moderators: I don't know whether you would consider actually going through thread titles and changing them to something that has meaning where appropriate and ofcourse informing the authors so they'll know or whether you would consider that too much a violation of their individual expression of speech.

Everyone, please vote on the poll.

Chill. Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

Russell my friend you must be on a phone modem! Although I do agree with you for the most part, I don't want the mods changing a title without a good reason.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Thread titles like: "I don't like this", or "Probably been said before..." are completely uninformative as to what is in them. as I have a dial up modem, I will typically ignore them, as they tend to devolve quickly into borderline off topic anyway. there'e lot's of threads I do want to read, after all.
but I don't think mods should change the titles, just to mollify us ranters
