Well, the Tories screwed the crap out of it (don't try and visualise that metaphor), so they take the lion's share of the blame. At least Labour aren't actively f*cking it up...

But it's a damn good thing for them they've got at least another parliament and a half - Attlee was a hell of a lot quicker than this at sorting it all out....

At least you didn't blame privatisation per se.

The privatisation was rushed and botched. Even so... up until Hatfield and the major engineering works, punctuality and safety records were actually better than they were under British Rail. Even now, it smacks of political opportunism to blame the private companies for problems that have been inherent for thirty or forty years, under governments both Labour and Conservative.

I guess in all areas of public life we just missed that whole 'year zero' effect after '45 - we won the war, so we must be doing it right. Other European countries had to rebuild from scratch.

Do you think southerners are more pro-european than northerners?

London for example seems pro-€uro. Which is more than can be said for other parts of the country.

You know, I'm just thinking how much more interesting life would be if the coins you carry actually vary a bit...

You know, what if the Canadian dollar were minted the same way. There'd be a design for Ontario, one for Quebec, one for Alberta, one for BC, one for Nunavut etc....
And the American dollar too, which will have 50 designs for the states, plus the countries which use the US$ would each have their own designs.

Well I have made some payments with the euro although I prefere to stick with Drachmas untill the 28 Feb.

I can say it grows on you. BTW I have never used a bill so far. Everything in everyday life (like buying a souvlaki for example!)can be done with coins. Just coins.
It has a Roman Empire feeling to it with all those coins transactions... (don't throw tomatoes on me now please)

I can not help myself into NOT looking suspiciously to anyone giving me change in euro too. And that's a plus since if they can con you, they will

There are bout 12 different designs for the UK pound coins. They have lions, thistles, leeks, dragons, emblems, etc...

The Scottish, Channel Islanders, Manx, Gibraltese etc.. also have their own notes for the same currency.

mmm....

actually there are different designs for Canadian coins too, but so far the 'rare' ones are rare and far in between.

I wonder, what will be the extent to which the Euro coins be mixed? Will you genuine buy something in Spain and get Portuguese, French and German change?

Yes, it's just a matter of time. As noted by someone before, Spain and Italy will receive loads of German and Irish coins this summer, FE. And the other way round. I plan on summer-touring Europe spreading all my Spanish Euros...

This is, of course, a function of time. Experts seem to have calculated the average "speed" of Euro coins to be 2 km a day.
The second time I payed with Euros, the change contained 3 foreign coins: 2 Belgian euros and a German 50 cts piece.

I think the probability of getting foreign coins is greater in, say, the Benelux, than say, Finland and Greece.

It's much easier for a coin to skip from Bremen to Amsterdam than from, say, Athens to Naples.
