After all, they get their pageviews out of it. If people don't want to participate in flamewars they can ignore the forum. The people who want serious discussions and deport the flamers to the flamewar forum and continue.

And who loses... The Site Owners have limited resources for this site. In their minds (and I have to agree) this is a game fan site.
The OTF was set up remove non game issues from the on topic forums. They have shown no interest in allocating any more resources to non game things. Other sites have set up "flame war" forums... non of them got much traffic.
Plus, it has the potential to spread into other forums. Now you may respond... just ban people that do... but as you can see, whenever a restriction happens, disruption seems to follow

Ming: It's a good thing the flamewar forums don't get very popular elsewhere. What it'd be used for is to remove the section of posts in threadjacks that evolve into flamewars, push them into the flamewar forum and let them get it out of the system. Otherwise it'll keep popping up in other threads (as we keep seeing) which eventually result in the Big Bad Moderators coming in and shrieking and yelling for sanity. At which point they take it to another thread, and eventually are banned. Then the same thing happens once they're unbanned, ad naseum.

I still think it's pretty stupid to say first that flamewar forums don't become popular, and then say something about how it'd waste resources. Whatever, maybe it's just me.
