DinoDoc:

Here are a couple of sites that should help you out. TOAW II is a great game. Also check out the Wargamer site for more scenarios for this game

http://hjem.get2net.dk/PlanetHolger.../toaw/index.htm

The Wargamer:

Click on this link and then scroll down to Strategy and Tactics, and there you'll find several articles dealing with strategy for TOAW II and many more wargames:

A lot of very useful bits'n'pieces in that lot. Editors, maps, units, the works.

Not wanting to be too greedy but you wouldn't happen to have a similar site for Star General too by any chance would you?

ravagon:

Sorry, I don't have any sites for Star General. I mainly play wargames when I'm not playing Civ

I hope you have some luck finding what you need.

Urban Ranger:

Panzer General is still a lot of fun. You can download a free copy from the web.

Panzer General 2 is stronger today than when it was released 5 years ago. Have you tried some of the new campaigns and equipment files? All your questions will be answered at JP's Panzers. Very helpful bunch of fellas.

They range in age from 15 to 65 - so everyone is welcome.

I really only have two questions.

1) Of the wargames that you listed that are free for download, which one would you recommend to a person that hasn't played such a game before?

2) In The Operational Art of War, II, which of the scenarios would be good to start out on in order to get your sea legs for the game so to speak?

I would recommend playing a board wargame with a human first.

Axis and Allies (or Risk) doesn't count, but all the vintage Avalon Hill and SPI games do. Okay, most of them.

Hm, you could even try Steven Jackon's Car Wars and Orge, or small ones such as Metagaming's Grav Armor and Black Hole.

That's pretty complex, you don't want to start out with that. Panzer General 2 is much simpler. You can also try Pazer General 3 though it's not a free game.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

DinoDoc:

1) Currently PG2 is not available as a free download. The link I had is not available. That may change in the near future. I think it has been re-released and can be found in computer stores bundled with 3 other games at a very cheap price.

In the meantime, I would suggest downloading Allied General (it's available at the underdog site).

Then for information on how to play it as well as the patch you will need head on over to:

JP's Panzers

http://pub88.ezboard.com/bjpspanzers

You'll find a sub-forum there dedicated to Allied General. You'll get all the help you need there

2) Since you already have TOAW II, I would suggest playing an Arab/Israeli scenario ('56, '67, or '73). These scenarios are smaller and with the mid-east currently in the news, it should be quite relevant

Again, head over to JP's, and in the sub-forum Wargamer, you can discuss the game there if you want.

I find a lot of the newer games coming on the market may have the glitz, etc, but I always find myself going back to the "older" games time-and-time again. There was something special in how they were created. They were fun

What's happened to games today? Where is that spark that made games so special?

One good general game is missing in your list... Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

Fantasy General. I think this is great game, though I've never tried any other games in General-series (I don't even know why I never did - maybe I was happy with FG). What I've heard, this is basically the same game as Panzer General, but with fantasy units, and I think it's cool...

If you have never played FG, and if you like wargames and D&D - you may like this game too...

Haupt. Dietrich:

Yes, the TOAW COW edition is the best version of the game. It's kinda fun playing scenarios based on events that we currently read about in the news

aaglo:

I have heard that FG is a very good game, although I've never had a chance to play it. I'll have to try it soon.

If you like FG, you might also like Panzer General (you are a general that fights historical battles from 1939 to 1945. Along the way, you build an elite core of militray units such as Tiger tanks, recon units, artillery, fighters, etc), Allied General, and Panzer General 2.

After a while, you get attached to the core units that you add to your little band of invaders.

You can get PG and AG as free downloads, and we're working on getting PG2 as a free download.

It's great to play a game that models all conflicts, past and present. The wargamer.com has a ton of user scenarios for all of the TOAW series.

TOAW is essentially a game of maneuver: picture the German Blitzkrieg during the opening phases of Barbarossa, when massive Soviet armies were surrounded, cut-off from supply, and were forced to capitulate.

One of my favourite scenarios is the Korean War (1950-53) found in TOAW I. It's a blast trying to re-create MacArthur's brilliant end-run at Inchon

There are several differences:

  • All units now take up just one slot regardless of the ranking of leaders
  • AA guns are a lot weaker
  • Leaders don't automatically get medals when they reach rank 5
  • There are new victory conditions

Leonidas,

I like the Korean War scenario but can never pull off a win with the North Korean's. OTOH trying to save the South is indeed fun, agreed.

Wargamer.com, now that's a website for all your TOAW needs! Downloaded quite a few scenarios from here. One in particular that was interesting to play was a hypothetical conflict between modern day Germany and Poland.

ravagon:

I have to agree that People's General is an excellent game. The interface is very well done, but it would be nice to see other theatres of conflict be modelled in the game.

Haupt. Dietrich:

Have you tried attacking the South and THEN retreating north? If you can draw the South Koreans/Americans north, try to get them to approach BOTH the Chinese and Soviet borders. There is a percentage chance that the closer the UN forces approach these borders that both the Chinese and Soviets will intervene in the conflict. This should be done fairly quickly, as the UN ground forces will receive huge reinforcements at Pusan later in the conflict.

The North Koreans NEED this massive influx of communist air and ground forces.

On the other hand, this increases the likelihood that the UN (read the United States) may use tactical nuclear weapons.

Oh, the dilemmas of fighting regional and global conflicts

Case: TOAW can be ordered through Talonsoft's website. Or through another on-line store. If you want to buy a copy I would suggest purchasing TOAW: COW (Century of Warfare). This version includes all of the previous additions and patches. And there are lots of scenarios for it available at the wargamer site.

In the mean time here is a free wargame download called "The Ardennes Offensive". Can you accomplish what the Germans failed to do during the famous Battle of the Bulge? Test your skill as a general

There's one of those 3-pack packages (about $25 Aus) that's supposed to have OaW, Jagged Alliance 2 and the Kosovo expansion for OaW2. In reality it has both OaW's and the Expansion (Plus JA2 I guess - haven't tried that one) but all of the disks are mislabelled. Unfortunately its not the CoW edition though.
