I thought I'd better start light. I got a book called "Machiavelli: a very short introduction" by Quentin Skinner (Prof of Modern History @ Cambridge). Haven't got very far yet, but basically summarised it seems Machiavelli's philosophy seems in the vain of "You have to be cruel to be kind" or "If you pull the plaster off quickly it won't hurt as long". Sounds fine to me.
