Trying to build up.Concentrating forces in northern South America and southern US.
Consolidated region near India. We have a firm foothold here.

Warwick was bribed and consolidated. This city is very easy to defend. We can ship in troops here.We can use spys to sabotage and poison in this region.Vets will do harm and be constantly returned to Warwick.

Sanitation finished off.Tactics,Theology and Electricity discovered.

JSB built.Hoover next.Should be no delay in building.
Ais advanced in tech and infastructure, but not in armed forces.

LaFayette, we're not in that hurry
If Moi can play tomorrow, that's fine with me
I think I cannot play before that anyway
What's more I got to play in the Invasion Earth sucession game too and each time takes about forever.
The situation is very interesting, though, and I invite everyone to read the thread. STYOM's plan of nuking the whole earth because the AI has 1800 units and 180 cities against our 200 and 75 looks great

I think one person playing would do much better date wise.Heck an occ game could be well landed by now.Thats the fun part.Seems everyone has a slightly different plan

The start was slow.Just what the ai needs to hang in there.

and yes..I see many places on this map that would make for an excellent set of golf holes

Not much of Mongolia is exposed. They are located in North America.I have massed a few cavalry here......more needed though.Pretty sure all the ais have gunpowder.

I was kinda searching and hoping to see an opportunity in Trondheim.IIRC..this is where Sun Tzu's is.......we know where it is(find city) but don't know the lay of the land/defenses etc.Plus we don't have any large numbers in any one place.

So true...
and there is another slight advantage related: you are compelled to modify your strategy anytime the game comes back to you after having been played by the others (and IMO much of the fun in this game is precisely to stop now and then and ask yourself whether you might do better than what you are doing).

Anyway, moi, I'm very happy that you didn't sleep too long

I don't think I could ever play a gigamap game by myself anymore and I certainly don't know that I'd do any better than you guys. You found more settlers and advanced tribes from huts than I would have ever thought possible.

I like the idea of not knowing what the next player is going to do or what my civ is going to look like 30 turns from now.

Keep up the good (and entertaining) work!

Agree with Bird -- this is a most entertaining thread, and really turned me on to the idea of succession games.

Is there any reason a Mac MGE player couldn't participate? (I'm a newbie and don't know how well the cross-platform thing works. I do know I can play MP in "mixed" groups...)

Anyway, just wanted to say I've been reading this thread avidly and look forward to the coming installments. Very cool stuff, Julius & Co.

Put an end to popups!

Jrabbit
When we started this game, we decided that it would be open to any civ2 lover willing to play, even if it were only a few turns.
If you are a settler from the land of Ming and Rah, you should be especially welcome .
Being a newbie is not much of a problem since some of us are so strong players that what can deal with any situation you would leave to us .
Please let us know if you feel like it.

La Fayette -- I've known Ming and Rah since around 1973 and hang with them frequently. I've played Civ2 (SP) for only a month or so and have yet to win at Deity (but soon!).

If the MacIntosh thing is not a technical hurdle, I would love to join in...

Just beware -- Specific instruction (and considerable patience) from big, strong, experienced players would be required.

IIRC Smash is (or was) a Mac user.
You would therefore get sound advice if needed.
My own advice would be: download the game and try to play a few turns. If you feel that you are really spoiling everything, you can refrain from sending your savegame and ask for advice instead.
Don't be afraid though, I have already played succession games with awkward players in the team (I won't name them now ), and the more experienced ones always managed to catch up when needed.

Yes MAC is ok.

The save files look different cuz they have no mac resource fork, but they work fine.I use stuffit expander with dropstuff on my mac to decompress.

The only potential problem is with compressing.I had to get a mac freindly zip utility...PK zip or something like that. There was a preference to keep or remove the mac resource fork.A PC person can "fix" this themselves.....but we wouldn't expect them to have a clue now would we?

Then of course there is the MGE vs 2.42 non compatiblity issue.

Thanks for the welcome, and especially all the info, guys.

I'll do a little experimenting with my iMac (OS 9.0.4) and MGE (has latest patch to 1.1) this weekend. Not certain, but I think I got Stuffit and Zip as standard equipment. If no Zip, I'll go find the PK Zip version you mentioned, Smash.

Maybe I'll join in after that...

1855 ad. Hmmm nice situation, but we’re making war on many fronts. Not that I don’t like that. Warwick was a great capture in south Africa. It should produce many spies to wear down the English. I send a transport of Cavalry from New Zealand that should attack the Mongol on the Pacific coast of America. There is some weak spots South of Vancouver (I see Smash welcoming us) ... My predecessor have already disembarked in Florida. I carrelessly provoke the Vikings to war by staying too close from their cities that by the way seem to be disconnected. Weaks spots there ...
1856 ad. We capture the Viking town of Jelling in China.
1857 ad. We establish an embassy with the Mongols. ****, they are under democracy. No bribing. We discover Electronics. Refining next
1858 ad. We are lucky to have the vikings : we bribe their city of Issus somewhere in Mongolia.
1859 ad. 100 gold in a village in North Korea. We capure the Mongol city of Lisbonne on the East Coast of the USA. Mongol change gvt ! Fools ...
1860 ad. Pacific Eye founded in East Australia.
1861-3 ad. Many sabotage operations ... Many little battles, no significant progresss.
1864 ad. We discover Steeel too, (I forgot when we got refining, and we grabbed Fundy from the Vikings). We see the Mongols are planning a counter attack near Porto Alegre, on the Brasilian Atlantic Coast. Watch out nex player !

The wars are not going that well and we’re only inflicting minor damages. We lack good communications and money. Engineers are working on the former (especially in Central America), while a few caravans are en route to the English democracy for the latter. It would be nice to buy some viking or mongol cities and be able to produce troops from their territories. Our cities in the Pacific Islands are far, far away.
Overall, the situation is sound but we need to hasten if we want to conquer it all.

I've been away for a few days but have downloaded a Mac-friendly ZIP (ZipitMac 2.1) utility in that time. Will experiment (tonite I hope) to learn its use in compressing game files. Per Smash, standard download via Stuffit should work. Julius, I think what I'll do is email a game file that I've downloaded and then re-compressed.

Too much stuff still unclear to commit, but once I've gotten through these mechanics, I think I'll join in.

Would love to do all this now, but am in my stupid firewall-ridden NT work environment, complete with Nazi IT dept. Oh, well.

The final war has started. We are now fighting hard against the Mongols, the English and the Vikings.
I shall explain later which is the situation of each foe. Here are the main events:
1866: A Mongol spy bribes Lisbonne (Mongols get Tactics ). We decide not to fight for that city which is all alone and isolated (the Mongols might take it back and get a new tech each time).
1867: Amphibious Warfare discovered
1869: HOOVER DAM finished building; Machine Tools discovered
1871: Combustion discovered
1874: Automobile discovered
1876: Nottingham conquered

Now, here is the situation on each front:

1) English
The English are weak and fight awkwardly (not quite their reputation in real life ). Our shipchain between Paraguay and the western coast of Namibia is almost complete. We have just taken Nottingham almost without losses and the walls of York are down (vet spies, thank you ). Conquering the English Empire should be almost a piece of cake.

2) Mongol
They fight fiercely, and have probably already lost 20 units or so in the great battle of Ormuz (my advice: sabotage enemy units when needed with our numerous vet spies). We should perhaps be able to take Ormuz in 1877. And our supply line is almost complete: all cities in South America linked by RR + road between Panama and Ormuz completed + RR Panama-Ormuz should be completed in 3 or 4 turns.

3) Viking
I have chosen a supply line from northern Australia (shipchain almost complete to Ghulaman + road under building between Ghulaman and Holmgard, which is the first Viking city that I have chosen to attack).
Holmgard should be ours now, but the AI has not been kind to us:
7 vet spies needed to destroy the walls!...and a vet Alpine unit fortified in the mountain killed in one blow by Viking Cavalry
. Most of our Australian engineers are now being transferred to south east Asia in order to build a RR Ghulaman-Holmgard ASAP.

We are now at least 10 techs ahead of anyone and Mobile Warfare is to be discovered in 1877. Our treasury has grown up to 3500+. Our first industrial city, Warwick, builds 1 cav/2turns. And our holy capital is going to start growing well over size 12 with help of food caravans.
Enjoy!
