EU2 Question Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

So I just picked this game up and have started playing in the Fantasia campaign as the Iroquios.

My questions are this:
1) Why am I not able to colonize certain provinces, only plop traders down on them. (I have enough money, and a settler, I have also cleared out all of the natives, so that gets rid of the obvious).

2) Can the Iroquios build ships? I am wondering because I have a city on the coast, with a port, yet I can't build ships.

One pet peeve is how do natives manage to defeat my armies when they have 1 - 2 thoudand fellows, and I have 10-12 thousand?

Well thats that.

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

To colonize, you have to have a colony or sea access next to where you want to colonize. At least that's how it works in my GC with England.

The Iriqouis may not be able to until they have contact with Europeans, although I haven't played Fantasia so I don't know. Do you have enough tech to build the ships? Do you have enough manpower?

Tech and morale are my two answers. When fighting natives and revolts it's all about morale.

Suffering from ads?

I think it's tech level 0 to build ships galleys.

I found out about the colonies, it would appear that to colonize the province either has to be a) adjacent to a city, or b) on the coast.

Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

And placing a Colonist costs a lot of money while placing a Trader is cheap. If you dont have enough money the option of placing Colonists is grayed out without any mention of the reason why.

Suffering from ads?

To be able to colonise a province it must be

a) A coastal province

b) Next to an exsisting city (over 700 pop) of yours

c) In a speacial area, the great lakes count as a speacial area and you can colonise around this area even if you don't meet the above criterea.

If you don't meet any of the above then all you are allowed to place is a trading post.

Hope this helps
