I love unit support being directed from taxes. I hate unit support from cities in civ2. I couldn't even explore with a caravel less my city go into disorder if it was too small. Something I really don't miss from civ2.

I'm sure there are other things. I will leave them for others to discuss and argue over.

anybody who says something bad about the game in this thread shall be banned from Apolyton for life.

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

Well I listed my likes about Civ3 recently in the thread "Is there anything GOOD bout civ3" ... but to try to help out the positivity of the forum, here are two new ones:

With air units, bombard units, and the retreat option for mounted units, there is a real potential for making combined arms crucial and fun. Currently horse units are too good, but once they get toned down, combat can be real interesting.

If you get an AI to declare war on an enemy, he actually fights! And if several AIs attack, the target civ is in big trouble. This really solves the problem presented in that funny column #166 "MEMO TO ISABELLA, QUEEN OF SPAIN".

Also, since they are so important, I'll repeat these four:

Civs have some individuality with traits and unique units.
Population units have a nationality.
Must garrison your conquests.
Luxuries and strategic resources are fun to secure.

Though many problems, there is a lot to like about Civ3.

Thanks for reading.

Additionally to often mentioned benefits like strategic and luxury resources, the increased diplomacy and the smarter AI (compared to Civ2), I like the corruption model (yes!), because it prevents ICS (too powerful and easy), forces you to plan your empire and it's expansion, makes you think twice before founding a city or building city improvements. Thus it makes your core cities more valuable and the game more difficult. That's probably the reason why many people don't like the corruption.

Agreed, although I would not tone down the mounted units, but tone up the defenders, may be by doubling the defend value of pikemen vs. mounted units as seen in Civ2, or adding anti-tank units in modern times (as exist in reality), that don't harm infantry much but are deadly for tanks.

I like the new map generator...

Just kidding... that is not the only thing I like about Civ3. As others already mentioned, strategic and luxury resources, how the air units are handled, the concept of culture (but not necessarily how it was implemented)... I like how you can see the replay at the end (better than the one in SMAC), some graphic touches (units, the overall feel of the game), and other little things that I am sure I can't remember now.

I like units being supported by gold (for the reasons mentioned above)

I like culture. It makes the game more than just a race to build cities and improvements to support units and warfare.

I like cities culture flipping. Sure its frustrating at times but it adds a level difficulty to the game that I enjoy (Cities also revolted in Civ2 if you remember)

I like workers for working and settlers for settling.

I like the ability to trade anything for anything in negotiations. (Though more things to trade would be great)

I like humor found throughout the game. (You say you want a revolution / Yes it's gonna be alright / No you can count me out)

I like capturing workers/units

I like small wonders

There is much more to this game I like and many things I don't but over all the positives far outway the negatives

I like the graphics.
Now that I accepted it edits only rules, I like the editor.
I like having borders determined by my brightness.
I like having some variety in my conquests, not only moving my 200 howitzers to take out Eurasia in a single turn (always did this in Civ2).
I like having to choose between civ traits
I like winning with culture or diplomacy. As I'm a builder, I truly like builder's strategies were adressed.
I like having a backstabbing AI, which thinks only in terms of power rather than morale (pretty realistic too)

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I like the Planetary Party Lounge.

As soon as I researched the laser and saw that I'd be able to add this to the spaceship I looked towards the heavens and whispered, "Thank you, Jeebus, thank you!"

I knew then that this game was going to be something...special...

I like the lack of dialog boxes during the AI's turn. That really bothers me with Civ2.

Culture is ok (except stupid city flipping), resources are nice, and civ specific abilities/units.

More humour:
Sometimes, when offering you something, the AI says "And that's cutting me own throat" or something like that, you'll get this if you've read anything by Terry Pratchett.
