changing unit names--how? Got spare money?

What do I need to change when I change the unit name to keep if from crashing? Do I have to change every file associated, or just the folder name?

Speak slowly please, I'm not all that bright...

You need to change the folder name and the INI file in that folder, both are named correspondingly to the unit name in the editor.

Why won't you answer my private emails? Am I on your ignore list? Why can't I upgrade my armies? Does Sid know I exist? Why do I flip burgers while you party with rockstars? How come Infogrames doesn't helicopter me into hunt valley to save your company from success? Why do I cry my self to sleep each night because nobody even fake internet people pay attention to me? Did you know the fact you made it so I can't place cities in the editor makes you worse than Hitler?

Why won't you answer my private emails?...

Put an end to popups!

shoot, I should have checked this sooner...

What is the "INI" folder? In my Crograms\infogames\civ3\art\units folders they have .amb, .wav, and .flc files, plus one text-lookin' file with no suffix. Is this the INI?

Hoping it is as I prepare to fool with it...

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

Sorry, let me be more specific.

Let's say for example you wanted to change the "Warrior" into "Tough Guy".

First you'd locate the /Art/Units/Warrior folder, then look inside and you'll find a Warrior.ini file.

Rename the Warrior.ini file to "Tough Guy.ini", then Rename the Warrior folder to "Tough Guy"

furtigan, in the windows explorer menu named tool theres an option named folder options. inside there you can find a choice to view file extensions. it sounds like you are not seeing the .ini extension because they are already associated with a program (it might already be associated with notepad).

Another nice thing I've found that works for adding units is . . .

Let's say you making a custom mod, but you don't want to change the original game (so that you can go back to the original for comparison, etc.).

First, you'll be editing a bic file with a name other than the Firaxis default (civ3mod.bic). Now you want to add units to the game without changing the original units. Given Dan's example above about changing "Warrior" to "Tough Guy" you would first [copy] the warrior unit folder . . . paste it in a different directory . . . rename the copied folder to "tough guy" . . . and rename warrior.ini to toughguy.ini on the inside of your new unit folder. Now, place that folder back into your units directory and mod it to your hearts content.

You now have two similar folders in the units subdirectory: the original that will be used by the default bic file and one that will be used when called upon by your scenario bic file.

I've done this so that my wife can still play the original while I mess around with a scenario.

Maybe you guys already know all this stuff, but I hadn't seen this posted anywhere, so I thought it could help someone.

Colonel:

Absolutely! I do the same thing (I made a "Shock Trooper" using the Paratrooper graphics). I just didn't want to further confuse our burgeoning modder here

Since we're talking about advanced stuff here, I might as well mention again that since the v1.16f patch you can now create different unit graphics and animations for each era. Take a look at the Settler, Worker, Leader, and Army files for an example of how it works.

When you are on that subject:
Wiil units created that way read era-specific icons from the units_32.pcx file as well?
In that case how to know where to place them?

Would this allow us to solve the problem of seeing AI spearman in the modern era, or the AI attacking with Ancient looking units along side modern units.

We could change the unit graphics for spearmen through the ages so that they look appropriate?

eg.
Ancient = Spearmen
Medievel = Militia
Industrious = Armed Tribesmen (flintlocks etc)
Modern = Home guard (dad's Army )

I am assuming that the cue to change the unit appearance is local to the particular civ era and not by the players current era.

Anyway if this is the case this is EXCELLENT

Yes, one could use this to model "evolving" units, though their stats would not change, only their appearance.

In answer to your query, Gramphos, I don't think the unit icons reflect the evolution of the unit via the units_32.pcx. Whichever unit is displayed there will be the one used throughout the game.

So the changed icons are just for the originaly chaging units?

Well, I think it would make sense for the graphics to change too.

Let us know what you find, inquiring minds want to know...

Thanks,

Thanks,

Maybe. All I know is that the Leader and army has icons for each era (3 extra icons), and thet the worker and settler have one extra icon.

I don't know what happens if you create another eraspecific unit. would thoses extra icons be in the wrong place then, or would the new unit not change icon?
